Urgent and very profound Harvard question here -- will September likely be shorts weather in Cambridge? D lives in shorts, flip-flops and sundresses - hoping to ease her into this whole Northeast climate change.
September you're good with summery type clothing, like shorts and flipflops. Move-in day last year was ridiculously hot, and I needed a fan or two for the first few weeks of school (sorry folks, no a/c!). By like the end of September, early October, though, it's already getting cooler out. Definitely make sure she has fall clothing when she moves in, because it comes pretty quickly. Also, beware...we don't get much of a transition. It seriously feels like it goes from summer to late fall within only a few days, and that lasts until like late April.
No Bed Bath & Beyond in the Galleria, alas. There's a Macy's home store, but that's a little more expensive.
There's a BB&B near Fenway (Red Line inbound to Park, change to Green B, C, or D, get off at Fenway), and another that's a bit of a walk from the Wellington T stop (Red Line inbound to Downtown Crossing, change to Orange Line, get off at Wellington).
The closest Target to Harvard is on Arsenal Street in Watertown (take the 70 or 70A bus from Harvard Station), although there's also one south of the city near Andrew Station (Red Line inbound to Andrew).
And by the way, to get to the Cambridgeside Galleria, take the Red Line inbound to Kendall/MIT, and either walk or take the free mall shuttle from there. The mall is also within walking distance of Lechmere Station on the Green Line, and you can take the 69 bus from Harvard to Lechmere.
There's actually a Staples in Harvard Square, so that's at least very close.
The closest Shaw's/Star Market to Harvard is on Beacon Street in Somerville, which is a bit of a hike, but not a huge hike, from Harvard Square. It might be easier to get to the Shaw's in Porter Square (Red Line outbound to Porter) or the one near MIT (1 bus). There's also a Shaw's in Brighton which is accessible from the 70 or 70A bus from Harvard.
There is a Whole Foods near Alewife Station (Red Line outbound to Alewife).
