Class of 2009, the moment of truth has come. You know who you all are. We’ve been lurking on the Harvard board since we were young, and now today’s the day. Whether we get accepted, waitlisted, or rejected, it doesn’t matter to me personally, because I met the hardest-working, coolest people ever on CC and I wouldn’t mind if any of them took my spot because I know they deserve it. And I wouldn’t mind going to college with the rest of you guys somewhere else.

IMPORTANT: This is a thread for reporting decisions and stats. Please be aware that this is not a thread for discussing acceptances/rejections, exclaiming or bemoaning, etc. There are other threads already up on the Harvard board available for discussion (**The Official Harvard Admissions Decisions Discussion** Start posting after 5). Any unrelated posts will be subject to deletion.

And thank you, to everybody who is going to take the time to write down their stats and decisions. It helps so many future applicants (I know I was one) as well as giving us a kind of “peek” into the admissions process. Be specific as you want, but if you are only go to post your GPA and SAT scores, don’t bother posting.

And remember – you applied to Harvard University. So the geniuses on the Harvard board (a.k.a. goldenratiophi, who rocks so much that even the Stanford board ripped off his code) created the ultimate foolproof HTML format for all of us. There are no spaces to remove between the brackets, just copy & paste, fill in what you want, and post reply. Let’s prove that we are the most competitive, intelligent senior class in history and make our posts look pretty, shall we?

Let’s have the best damn official decisions thread ever on CC.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:
  • SAT I (breakdown): 800R, 720M, 800W
  • ACT: n/a
  • SAT II: 740 US History, 720 Lit, 640 Biology-E
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 98-ish (not sure what that is on a 4.0-scale)
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 7/251
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 US Hist, 4 World Hist
  • IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
  • Senior Year Course Load: AP Statistics, AP French, AP Gov & Politics, Humanities Seminar at Queens College, Philosophy 101 at Queens College, gym
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist, 1010WINS Tomorrow's Newsmakers Awards finalist, Empire State School Press Association brozne award, National Latin Exam: Summa Cum Laude
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Student Newspaper (Co-Editor-in-Chief), NHS (Vice-President), Mentoring Program (Mentor Leader), Archon community service society, TDF Open Doors Program (secretary), Mu Alpha Theta, NYS Science Honor Society
  • Job/Work Experience: nonpaid internship at local newspaper
  • Volunteer/Community service: 4 years at senior center; various charity walks/events
  • Summer Activities: community service, extensive travel, newspaper internship, Summer@Brown writing course
  • Essays: I thought they were unique, but it's hard to judge your own writing in cases like this
  • Teacher Recommendation: Never got to read them
  • Counselor Rec: Never got to read it
  • Additional Rec: n/a
  • Interview: Had two alumni interviews. The first went extremely well, and the second went fine.
Other
  • State (if domestic applicant): NY
  • Country (if international applicant): USA
  • School Type: competitive public HS
  • Ethnicity: half Asian, half white
  • Gender: female
  • Income Bracket: ...
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
Reflection
  • Strengths: My scores were pretty decent (except for my SAT II Bio score), and my interviewers were very impressed that I know the same computer program used at the Harvard Crimson. Both had been student journalists at Harvard and were intrigued by my journalistic achievements.
  • Weaknesses: SAT II Bio score, and possibly my essays. Again, it's hard to judge.
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess I'm just one of those candidates that's pretty good, but not outstanding? I never expected to even be waitlisted.
  • Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Cornell, Vanderbilt, Northeastern, Skidmore, and SUNY Geneseo. Waitlisted at Amherst and Dartmouth. Rejected from Yale SCEA and Princeton.
General Comments: Good Luck to everyone else! I will mostly likely make a deposit at either Cornell or Vanderbilt (full tuition honors) and stay on the waitlists of Harvard and Amherst.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
  • SAT I (breakdown): 2280 (800 CR, 710 M, 770 W)
  • ACT: n/a
  • SAT II: 780 Lit, 780 World History, 750 Bio E
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/200
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): Spanish Lang (5), USH (5)
  • IB (place score in parenthesis): ...lol.
  • Senior Year Course Load: AP English Lit, AP Physics B, AP Calc AB, AP Psych, Church History, World Religions, Honors Econ/Gov't, independent study of AP Spanish Lit
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Uh, National Merit Finalist?
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): varsity fencing (captain), environmental volunteering (school recycling manager), Debate Club (founder/co-president), Literary Magazine (editor-in-chief), Art Club (treasurer), NHS, bilingual community production of The Vagina Monologues for charity
  • Job/Work Experience: working at my dad's office one summer. >.>
  • Volunteer/Community service: assorted environmental/aforementioned vagina-related things.
  • Summer Activities: a bit of volunteering+Girls' Leadership Workshop 2007, TASP 2008
  • Essays: One was extremely personal and well-written (and I have VERY high standards for my own writing), all about androgyny and my idolization of Eleanor Roosevelt; the supplement was a HUGE risk, but it was unique. I got my friends to write little testimonials saying why I should go to Harvard. They were hilarious.
  • Teacher Recommendation: One was absolutely stellar, saying that I was the most amazing human being that she had ever encountered, inside the classroom or out; no idea about the other, but the teacher liked me, so...
  • Counselor Rec: No clue. He's a nice guy, but I don't know him that well.
  • Interview: I thought it was a disaster (i.e., I accidentally insulted my interviewer's hometown, couldn't answer a simple geography question, and rambled. A. Lot.), but I heard through the grapevine that he was impressed with me?
Other
  • State (if domestic applicant): New York (upstate--well, at least from a NYC/Westchester perspective)
  • Country (if international applicant):
  • School Type: coed Catholic, ~900 students.
  • Ethnicity: White.
  • Gender: is a malleable state of mind.
  • Income Bracket: $65k
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Does TASP count? Don't think so.
Reflection
  • Strengths: Definitely my essays. Plus, though I have fewer APs than a lot of y'all, I'm taking five now, and before this year no one at my school had taken more than three. EVER.
  • Weaknesses: Not having done anything totally extraordinary (i.e., traveled the world, cured cancer, etc.).
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My application was very well-written, I have to say. When I read over it, I definitely got a sense of me coming through. That, and a pinch of luck.
  • Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Yale (EA) and Smith; withdrew all otehr apps after Yale.
General Comments: Well. This was... unexpected.

This is the research btw:

9th Quantitative Analysis of Electron Transition in Helium

Þ Evaluated the quantitative changes in the helium atom as electrons transition to higher energy states to understand how excitation affects atomic properties for application to engineering materials

10th Evolution of Time Independent Wave Functions in an Electrostatic Field

Þ Calculated dilations in the wave functions of the Helium atom in a static electromagnetic field to elucidate effects of magnetism on particles for optimization of engineering design environments

11th Evaluation of Photon Tunneling Probability by Spatial Variation

Þ Analyzed the relationship between the probability for photon plane waves to undergo quantum tunneling and the width of the tunneling barrier for development of more efficient engineering materials
