valedictorian

is valedictorian determined at the end of 12th grade or at the end of first semester?

if its at the end of year, how would the colleges know it?

can you explain wat reach means. and things like slight reach.??

Depends on your school

I know some schools name the Val at like November for a rank to give to colleges, whereas some don't name theirs until like March.

My school doesn't do Valedictorian.

I think rank is detrimental to the learning experience. But perhaps because my school has a recognized name. So getting a B in Astrophysics is still very respected to colleges.

My school keeps a constant ranking from first semester freshman year until after first semester senior year. Grades through junior year are the grades submitted to colleges (we don't get first sem senior grades until jan 20 or so) and your rank is based on those. Final class ranking is based on first semester senior grades as well.

My hs gave out ranks every semester after spring of your junior year, but valedictorian and salutatorian were not determined until 2nd semester senior grades came out in June. As a result, the top 5 people had to write speeches because we technically didn't know who the top 2 would be.

As far as your question about reaches and slight reaches...a reach is somewhere you aren't likely to get in, but you want to try anyway. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. are reaches for almost everyone. For a person with a 1350 (old) SAT, Georgetown would be a reach. A slight reach is in-between a match and a reach. For the person with a 1350, Wake Forest and Carnegie Mellon would be slight reaches.
