:d

Hey guys!!! I haven't replied to this thread in a long time.

So this week, I got a minor detention for having my phone ring during Chemistry class. It was awful; my phone got confiscated, all of that stuff.

My grades are mediocre right now. I have As in all my classes except for Chemistry Honors which I have a B+ in right now (ughh.) It's also embarrassing that I have A-s in my non-honors, required classes (classes that aren't leveled): Theology, Health, and Phys Ed. initially I didn't care about them/put no effort... this is seriously going to ruin my class rank D:<

Oh, and I might create a Science Olympiads club next year too (sophomore year). Do you guys have any suggestions on how to start such a club? I have a bunch of friends (sophomores, juniors, etc) who I know would consider joining such a club. And I'm also pretty friendly with the head of the science department at my school.

That kinda sucks. Did you parents have to come pick up your phone?

About your grades, do you still have time to bring them up? My gradebook's closed and I'm currently on break, so I don't know about you.

I actually have no idea on how to start a club. I think it's basically you have to have a teacher who's willing to sponsor and then at least 8 people or something who want to be in it.

So how does your school calculate GPA? At mine, as long as you have an A (90-100), then you get 4 points. Which leaves a pretty big margin for error.

Two more days of finals to go here.

Here >80 would be A+ / 4.0.
70-79 would be A / 3.6.
65-69 is B+/3.2.
60-64 is B/2.8.
55-59 is C+/2.4.
etc.
I guess you would expect most people to get a perfect 4.0 here with the grading, but our average is actually a 3.4-3.5ish. Meaning people usually get low 70s average for their subjects on average. And getting 90+ is extremely good. 95+ is virtually unheard of, even for students who top that subject. Our classes aren't that difficult - but then we take a lot of subjects. If I get into all that I apply for, I'll be doing 13 classes next year! Haha it's really different here, and I wish we could have a block schedule with 4 classes at once! (:

And for starting a club, it varies from school to school but here basically we have to get the interest of a teacher. They have to endorse and agree to mentor you, then you write a proposal and there's a minimum number of students to start it too.

Thanks for the responses, y'all. Just walked home, barefooted and dressuited, from meeting with practically the whole entire social studies department at my school... all in the name of starting a club.

Has everyone been having such an interesting day?

I had a good day Cherry. I was elected to the Student Council, ****ed of a teacher who I don't like, went to Robotics and absolutely destroyed some debate N00B5!

Also, are any of you looking into summer programs/competitions?
I got my eye on CTY at John's Hopkins or the LEAD program.

my school's grading system
A = 95-100
A- = 90-94
B+ = 87-89
B = 83-86
B- = 80-82
C+ = 77-89
,etc

Something like that.... I'm also sure that you can't get an A+ according to the grading system. I don't know why though...

and
nah next summer, i'm just going to participate at the science museum's high school internship program, volunteer as peer leader and teach lil kids math/science at this summer program, and also do research at one of my father's colleague's labs at harvard med...

the national youth leadership forum in criminology/law keeps sending me emails and fancy looking letters though -__- I hear it's all basically advertising. but traveling to DC seems so much fun... If I get a scholarship I might go....

was literally crying inside when i got an 82 on my algebra 2 test... which dropped by 100 average to a 95 :'((

Cool!

My school has this:
A=4.0=93-100%
A-=3.7=90-93
B+=3.3=87-89
B=3=83-86

And so on.
The GPA is calculated by the average of all four of your quarterly grades, so it isn't super hard. However, we don't weight languages as honors and an AP class only adds 0.07 to your GPA (0.56 per class where we have 8 classes over 2 days which alternate) and an honors class is 0.05 to your GPA. The best ever GPA (weighted) was 4.35 I think, but I am on track for a 4.42!

Lol yeah, thats why I post in the 2016 thread xD!

But no, I'm not that smart, I just abused loopholes. Also, I guess I'm kinda good at math, but no big deal. But thanks!

Oh also, I actually turned down my district high school offering me a higher GPA and more AP's so I could go to an engineering high school, where I felt more at home. Go figure. And I'm asian. XD

by the way, what's CTY? i heard its for talented kids + you have you take the SAT. my friends from extracurricular science classes have participated in the camp thing during the summer....

during middle school, i had never heard of it. well can you still apply? (as a 9th grader)

Yeah you can, but the criteria gets harder. But it is really easy. I am in my school's gifted program and I did a 1650 and got into Intensive Studies. In 7th grade. As a 9th grader, you can get in with a PSAT of around a 150 I think, but you have to take it soon and send it into John's Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.

However, don't do it. It is 3000+ for something that will eliminate some of the better things that you said you wanted to do. It is only like a sleepaway camp for super-smart kids where you eat amazing food and then forget everything after that and get 1.0 credits per class even though it is at the "college level of excellence".
