American history required for universities?

I'm at a Canadian high school and never thought of taking American history as an elective but when I started looking into American universities I found out it was a requirement??

Check your universities' websites for their a-g...like some people take ap european history instead
There's also world history

Well at my school its called U.S. history and its mostly about the U.S. not all of America which should include South,Central and North America(Canada) not just the U.S.
