Team manager

My sophomore son isn’t athletically inclined. So, the coach suggested that he can be manager of the hockey team this winter to fulfill his sports obligation this year. Apparently it means assisting the coach anyway needed. What kind of work do team managers do? How do colleges view something like this when someone doesn’t play sports in high school? Thanks.
