So here is the deal:

My phone I previously had recently broke and my dad said that he is getting me a new one for Christmas. I have a temporary phone which is fine.

However, he refuses to spend more than $30 a month on any phone, let alone something like the IPhone or Galaxy S3 (Just Examples).

We are off well financially, however, my dad is just hardwired to not spend any money on stuff like phones.

So my question to you is, Is there any argument or case I can make that might help me in getting a higher quality phone or should I just suck it up until I get a job.

I'm not being spoiled, I'm just inquiring on how I should handle this.

This seems sort of absurd, if you want a more expensive phone buy it yourself. Personally I bought my last phone (decided I wanted a fancier model), this time I got a phone that was free and am perfectly happy with it. Anybody who is old enough to have a phone should be able to take responsibility and pay for it.

You can get an iPhone 4 for a cent through all of the carriers that have it if you renew your contract.

Otherwise, if you want a better phone, you should pay for it yourself.

I don't get the point of the smartphone for someone who isn't a working adult or possibly a college student depending on where they are and what major and their schedule..

I'm a working teen and a high school student with a busy schedule. Does that count?

Arguably the best part of having a smartphone is being able to keep in touch with people through e-mail and Facebook. My iPhone has saved me from many first-world calamities.

Besides, I don't see why people can't have whatever phone they want, so long as they don't think they're entitled to Mommy and Daddy buying them the newest iPhone and paying for the best data plan (or expecting them to pay for any of it at all).

I didn't say they can't. I just don't see the point. But, then again, I call myself a modern traditionalist. And I grew up without much technology beyond radio and tv.

I'm talking bout the contract costs. It's very expensive.

Look into prepaid plans. T-Mobile Monthly 4G and Virgin Mobile have crazy good deals. The phones cost a bit more upfront, but you will save money in the long run.

And Walmart has unlimited everything phones for 50$ a moth. You could always put in 20. But I would urge you to get a job.

Lol this is when I look at my chocolate, which I have used since middle school (2006), and appreciate my life. Honestly, you don't need it right now. I assure you that I am as busy if not busier than you, and I have survived life for a very long time with a rather basic phone and a physical agenda. If you actually have a concern, you will save time by making a phone call, and you likely know all the arguments against smartphones so I won't list the rest. I side with your dad on this one. You don't need to have an extensive data plan right now, and he is the one forking over money to cover what you should be paying at least mostly by yourself now.

Do you already have internet? I have an older phone, and I don't have internet because the contract to buy it costs way too much. A smart fun isn't really that great without internet, in my opinion.

I would appreciate what you have already or buy one yourself (and pay for the contract or whatever you need).

Honestly, iPhones and Androids really aren't worth it. Like yes, you're always connected and can do a million and a half things at once, but I think they're more distracting than anything. I'm downgrading from an iPhone 4 to my old enV3 and iPod touch. They get the job done and force me to focus.

Obviously, it's your choice. You could talk to your dad and highlight all the reasons why you deserve/need a phone. Then, you could find a reasonably priced phone (maybe refurbished) with a good contract and try that.
