Where to find volunteer work?

So, I've been trying to find volunteer work every where, but it seems like everyone has beaten me out of it. I've tried all the local museums, food banks, salvation armies, libraries, cancer foundations, tutoring places, and autisms societies. I've even tried volunteermatch.com but it wasn't too useful. Do you guys have any suggestions? Also, I"d like to do something other than filing papers or licking envelops, I'd actually like to contribute to the community.

I had trouble last summer finding enough hours. Our local libary, for example offers one hour a week MAX to highschoolers.

Didn't find anything on volunteermatch.

I ended up creating opportunities for myself with my musical abilities.

Do you have any sort of talent that you would want to share with people?

Have you checked the United Way website?

Also, bear in mind that a lot of volunteer work is simply filing papers or licking envelopes. It may seem mundane, but these behind-the-scenes jobs are necessary to the operations of every organization; that's why people ask you to do them. Sometimes low-profile jobs are the ones that have the biggest impacts.

Assisted living homes need volunteers--the elderly love to be around young people.

Habitat for Humanity? Find a list of all the foundations in your town and call them up. Worse thing that can happen is they say no. Newspaper? Enviromental groups? Congressman? City Hall

Heck start your own tutoring service. Go play an insturment at a nursing home. The private ones don't get as many visitors. Start some service for your community with other kids in the same situation. Start your own thing and then write about it for your essay.
