yeah i think it most likely is one. i got mine today (a long 7-10 days) and it says have it in by march 30th or pay an extra $5 late fee.
they have a quote on the paper that says:
"According to member Laurel Angelica, 'I feel that NSHSS was instrumental in helping me gain admission to my first-choice college, Princeton University.' " <<<<I'm SURE thats what did it...

I got one last year, didnt want to do it, my mom, howoever, signed me up. There's nothing really really important about it, if you want to, you can attend some important conferences and meet some important people. Plus there are some other benefits that I can't remember off the top of my head. I'll see if i can find them...

I got mine today. Is it like the infamous scam of the National Honor Roll? I hope this thing is genuine.

It's just another National Honor roll, who's who for high school students - buy a book for $40 moneymaking scheme. And you are not the one making the money! = not something college admins will be impressed by. However if you are worried you might miss out on something by not replying - reply but do not send money to buy book etc.

Well, when I got the card, my dad immediately wrote it off as a scam. And whether or not it's a scam, since it costs $45 to join, I'm going to stay out of it.
It says on the website that it's not like Who's Who... but then, I'm not going to pretend that I know anything about it. |

I, too, got that today and I just laughed as I threw it in the trash. It's just another vanity publication.
However, I also received another letter today notifying me that I am an Illinois State Scholar. I haven't heard of this before so I'm not sure if this is legit. Could someone from IL shed some light on this via PM? I'm skeptical but reserving judgment since I haven't found anything thus far claiming it to be a joke honor like Who's Who. Thanks (:

I'm a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. It's not just a scam. Being a member of NSHSS automatically granted me admission to the World Scholar Athlete Games in Kingston, Rhode Island this past summer (other students had to submit an application for reviewal before being allowed to participate). I'm not a college admission counselor, so I don't know if being a member helped me in the admission process, but it couldn't have hurt.
Also, NHS has nothing to do with NSHSS.

| Is that the same thing as AP State Scholar? If so, it's definitely legit.

It's not a scam. It's just useless.
