Go with a group of friends. That way there's less awkwardness when you and the girl you ask have nothing in common, and you know you can enjoy yourself with your friends. That's what I'm doing.

that's exactly why I don't like prom: no date for me while some other guy has like 4 offers from girls. I sense a revolution and "redistribution"......

^^Some guys just give off the kind of vibe that says that they'll make sure a girl will have a fun time at prom. Other guys give off the kind of vibe that says that if a girl will go to prom with them, then they'll take it too seriously (aka treat it as a first date) and make things awkward.

I went to my prom this year totally by myself. I drove myself to the dinner, I drove myself back to the school, and I went myself to the after-prom party. It was a really fun experience. Some of my friends had dates, but most just went in groups of all guys or all girls, or a mix. I was free to do whatever I wanted, and I didn't have to keep track of anyone or worry about making somebody jealous. I have pictures of me with seven different girls. Do you think that would be possible if I took a date? I don't.

This worked perfectly for me, but a lot of people at my school don't bother hooking up for prom. Your prom might be different. I suppose your own judgment is best here.
