Seriously, guys. Just ask casually. Unless you know that the girl likes you, don't do anything cutesy or grand. Trust me. We don't like it when that random guy in our Calc class who hasn't said a word to us all year does something elaborate. It's just embarrassing and stressful.

Do a risk and reward analysis on this. Your goal, presumably, is to get her to go to the prom with you. Your secondary goal is probably to limit your disappointment and humiliation if she says no. Do you think that an elaborate ask will make in more likely for her to say yes? Put that against the certainty of humiliation if she says no after the elaborate ask.

... tell me you didn't just compare probability and statistics to asking a girl out to prom. I can see this slowly developing into a Discovery Channel special.

Thanks, alamode, for sharing your friend's idea.... I am sure he doesn't mind it being disseminated on internet forums...

Guys, last year, I asked my date to the prom at a Quiz Bowl match. Seriously, it went like this:

Team: *general prom conversation at the table between matches*
Sophomore girl: "Hey, salamander, who are you taking to the prom?"
Me: "I don't know yet."
Me: *turns head to male friend sitting next to me*
Me: "Hey, C, want to go to the prom with me?"
C: "Sure."

Simple as that.
