Extra Curriculars

I am a rising sophmore and I am trying to figure out some good extra curriculars to do. I play a lot of sports, and I realize that I am not going to go on with that in my higher education. i also sing and play piano (both) competitively, but other than maybe a music minor, I don't think I would go on with that either. I am very interested in business/public relations/fashion related things, and I also LOVE to write. I was wondering if anyone knows any good things to do so maybe my EC's will show some direction. possibly summer programs too..?

You could always go to Wharton's summer program junior year. Try and get some of your writings published. Sell your fashion designs to local businesses and then help market the dresses or whatever you created.

The writing published may be a reach, but selling designs to a local business certainly is not. A bridal shop down the road from me has taken designs and transformed them into prom dresses/bridal gowns from people of all ages-- even high school students. Then marketing it would be fairly easy.

Get an internship with a local business that does something that interests you.

I know there is a business organization/competition, I think Business Professionals of America that hosts competitions and activities. You can check to see if your school offers that club. I know there are some other similar clubs, check to see what your school offers, I'm sure there are tons of people here on CC involved in them already. Also, if you're into the stock market, there are tons of competitions, for prizes and just for fun, that allow you to invest with fake money. They're pretty cool (and sometimes addictive).

If you're serious about fashion and not just "ooh I like shopping/looking at high-fashion magazines", then you might want to consider developing a portfolio of some sort.

Are you involved with your school's FBLA chapter? Does your school have a literary magazine?

My school (an arts magnet, so we have all sorts of wacky clubs) has a club called the Viewmasters, which is dedicated to all sorts of different kinds of art, unlike our Art Honors Society and Art Club. They def. do some fashion design work, so perhaps starting a club like this would be to your benefit?

yes, I did. and besides I am not into the acutal designing thing, its more that I enjoy being around fashion, critisizing it, that type of thing...

and technol21: are you sure you aren't talking about DECA? I am thinking about doing that next year, but I haven't quite decided yet.

Future Business Leaders of America! They do competitions and things. I think it sounds about right for you.
