A word of caution to you eager sophs/rising juniors...

...or to anybody, in general. You think that since this is the internet you can easily hide behind insults, snide remarks, racist/sexist opinions, etc. However, if you haven't heard of crooks being caught via the internet or haven't heard of the ever so famous Mark Foley incident (he was caught sending sexual emails/messages to younger boys) then you should know that not everything posted on the internet is private and your comments can be traced back to you.

Incidents of sexual solicitations are extreme examples of information posted on the internet, but my point is that you should be aware of what you post online, specifically on CC. Who knows when a college admissions officer will come across your comment boasting about you getting wasted or insulting the opposite sex/another race? Who knows when your comments may come back to haunt you when you decide to run for president in the future?

Focus on getting into college and taking those SATs, and good luck.

Is this in response to the idiots on the "Secret to a girl's heart..." thread?

Good advice. Unfortunately, people know it, but they still don't care.

Of course, like this is rare information no one knows about...[maybe totally un-technologized people]

nice advice by the way, although it really isn't hard to get rid of all the info, clear things, switch IP's, and using the internet/computer in other technological ways. of course, you're probably right in that it's best not to start problems in the first place.

Yeah, I admit it was inspired by the "Secret to a girl's heart" thread, but in general it's a good idea to leave your personal life out of online conversations. It was also inspired by Liist's "No, this is the internet, I can be who I want and I can troll how I want" comment. Plus, don't they have anything better to do than sit on CC and talk trash?

Honestly as for getting "caught" or with computer problems, the chances are incredibly slim unless you're a total idiot with computers/internet. Lol, my 4th grade cousin can probably bypass a lot of the stuff taken at face value, and etc.

but

holds some merit, i guess.

I agree with you, catsushi. But how do colleges trace information back to someone? Other than, say, facebook or somewhere with your full name published.

^ There are a few admissions officers on CC. They usually hang around their respective college's forum. Though they probably can't trace you back based on your username without legal assistance.

Why don't we put it like this: "You shouldn't be doing it in the first place?" Or "The HYP gods are always watching?"

Nice post, but I doubt this is anything new. But a reminder is nice every once in a while...

Hey!

It's not as if I were doing anything illegal. I was just being someone else on that thread and trolled like everyone else (especially stanford)

Go head an trace my IP. Comcast freaking resets it every 3 days and I have to reset the router every time they do so.
