Not exactly embarrassed, but kind of unlucky. I've always wanted to "be from somewhere". America's melting pot culture has made it so just average white people like me have no culture to speak of. That's why I always claim Danish heritage, even though I'm only half.

I LOVE British accents. o_o I don't get it either. People like things that are different, I suppose.

"america is the best and everyone wants to be an american."

Exactly the attitude that makes foreigners resent us so much.

brieb08-maybe, but given the choice, almost all of them would choose to come live here.

America is not the only "free" country in the world.

Good point^. It may be a jealousy thing. Brieb, it is a fact that we have more immigrants trying to get in than a place like France. It is not arrogance.

I realize that, but the immigrants trying to get in are not the ones being jerks to us when we visit other countries.

KMad I LOVE british accents too. I don't know or understand why. It really doesn't make any sense. but I just....melt. especially british singers/brits with good voices (a.k.a. alex turner).

dmission....well one might feel embarrassed if they percieve the majority of the decisions made by our government, which represents our country, over the past decadeish have been mistakes.
Much of the world dislikes our country because they think we meddle in their affairs way too much, and many also believe America is filled with mostly obnoxious, obese [tourists] who think that they are too good to even attempt to speak the native language of the country they are visiting (because these are the types of Americans who people from other countries often come in contact with). Obviously, people know these tourists don't represent all Americans, but they have become the basis of generalizations and stereotypes.
Some people would be embarrassed to be associated with these types of people/this stereotype.

Personally, I don't think I've ever really been embarrassed to be an American, per se, but I have experienced the urge to go smack people around the head when I see how some Americans act while on vacation in other countries, and the desire to explain that not everyone acts that way! And I have been somewhat embarrassed by some of the things that go on in our government, because our government represents our country and the country I am from, but I think anyone from any country could say the same....no country is perfect.
