incoming freshman. HOW TO READ CRITICALLY

Hi. I'm an 8th grader getting ready for high school. I'm a straight A student and I'm reading classics like Brave new world and to kill a mockingbird. How do you read critically by yourself without the help of teachers. I'm not reading for fun but rather I'm trying to read critically and analyze what I have read. Are there any online sites or any tricks to do this. Basically I want to learn how to read beyond what is being said. Learn what the theme is. Please help.

It's not about tricks. Read with the thought "Why is the author doing this" and you'll get a fine start. Don't fret too much - you'll learn how to read critically as a high school student - and teachers understand that it is a new way of reading for most.

dang i will read Brave New World next semester as a senior, you're crazy

anyway, your teachers will guide you in critical reading and soon you'll be doing it automatically b/c you can read a section and then go back and decide what you think about it
