Medical Internships

I've heard that going into med internships are good for students who might want to be doctors. My school offers a program, Structured Learning Experience, that allows students to job shadow doctors. Should I join this come senior year, even if I have to give up AP Physics, AP Spanish, and XC/Track since time won't allow it? (You have to give up 4th period classes to get to the mentor.) I'm also going to volunteer at a hospital, so would I need the internship?

Definately not. Those courses are important to your success in college requirements for pre-med. Would try to find a job or volunteer opportunity over the summer, or weekends in a health field. Even if it is volunteering at a nursing home. Following a doctor around (as a high school student) is not going to be that great. HIPPA prevents you seeing much due to patient confidentiality. I should know, I'm a doctor and I'm trying to find a placement for my D for next year. All of my doctor friends- in private practice or in the hospital- say there are too many limitations.

Definitely don't give up coursework and track for it.

I do know of several students who found other ways to shadow docs as high school students (either through programs or by calling around and asking physicians), so if you really want to shadow, find another way to do it.
