Well, my son called me from school and told me he got the NHMS...but his school of choice - Univ. of North Texas does not have a scholarship program for these students. He has his heart set on UNT because of the Music program, but I have my heart set on taking advantage of whatever monies he can get for college that doesn't come out of my already stretched-to-the-limit budget.

Does any know if any of the schools mentioned here which offer scholarships to NHM's have a good music program?

^That's interesting to hear! I remember looking at their website and being very frustrated with them only saying that all merit scholarships were worth between 2k and full tuition.

Congrats to everyone!

On the University of Arizona website it states that the scholarship is "offered to the National Scholars who qualify by taking the Preliminary SATs (PSATs) in high school." Does this include National Hispanic Scholars?

It was as of last year. My son received a letter last year around this time offering him full-tuition for 4 yrs at about $35K a year. He was accepted in the early round but he also go in to UPenn in the early round and it was his 1st choice and binding so he's there now. However, Fordham was a little slow processing the thanks-but-no-thanks paperwork and we kept getting calls from financial aid. Had he gone there we weren't going to be paying much...less than $5K a yr.

Based on my experience a couple of years ago...I urge everyone to call the schools' scholarship offices to ask directly about National Hispanic scholarship opportunities. Many times they are not shown on the website. Also, do not assume that the school is aware that your child is a National Hispanic Scholar--even if it was written on his/her application. Call, call, call!!!

Thank you to everyone that contributed to the vast amount of valuable information on this thread!
I am having trouble getting a request for verification sent to my child's school. I have contacted NHRP via their stated email address, but they are slow to respond. At one point they asked for my child's GC's name which we provided, but the school still has not received anything. I am not understanding the deadlines regarding this recognition. It concerns me becasue somewhere I saw the deadline to turn-in verification is mid-June. Do I need to be concerned? Will my child miss the opportunity to be recognized due to this glitch? If anyone has had a similar problem, I would appreciate your input. The college board FAQ list does not address this issue.
Thanks!

Welcome Wendy!

Please see my post #495 on this thread:

National Hispanic Recognition Program

If your school is still in session, I recommend having your GC call NHRP. If you are on summer break, don't worry, we have had many student receive the award even though the paperwork was done in the fall.

Colleges offering from 3/4 tuition to full tuition+ scholarships to NHS -updated 8/12

Hi all, since I have seen a lot of schools dropping or reducing their scholarships to National Hispanic Scholars I decided to do a search and see what is still outhere. Goods news is that there is still plenty of scholarship opportunities. Some still come from so called A schools and a great number come from regional A/B+ schools. For a kid looking not only for an undergraduate degree these are of tremendous value.

I decide to place the shortcut of each paged I found. If you don't see it at first try to navigagte thru the page. IF at first doesn't look as a full tuition rememeber thatn in many places the scholarships are stackable and should get you to the full tuition goal or even more. Good luck to the upcoming 2013 NHS class!!!

Thanks, lapagan! Ds is really interested in GW, and I'd heard that it wasn't great with the money. Maybe he can get that $15k! Though he'd still need a lot more ...

Just joined CC and am a little overwhelmed! My son was just named an NHRP scholar so I started doing some research and found CC. Thank you so much to all of you who have been doing this research and posting for the rest of us to benefit. We are getting a late start to the scholarship search (class of 13) because we thought our options were going to be limited financially. We made a default decision to go the local state school. Hopefully the NHRP scholar designation will help open up the opportunities.
