Minority middle and high school opportunities

A Better Chance is an organization that places low income high achieving minority students into private schools. Latino, african-american, native american, and asians are all eligible as are students of mixed races. Some of the schools are day schools. Others are boarding schools. This program truly changed my husband's life.

A Better Chance : Applicant Information
The College Preparatory Schools Program (CPSP) is an academic program that identifies, recruits, places, and supports students of color, in outstanding college preparatory middle and high schools nationally.

At A Better Chance we recognize that students come from different backgrounds and educational opportunities so each application is evaluated on its own merit. Generally, we select students who:

1) Consistently perform at or above grade level in math and English

2) Have an overall academic average of a B+ or better

3) Are ranked in the top 10 percent of the class

Students are required to take standardized tests. There are no score cut-offs but test scores are used to assess academic strength along with school transcripts, extracurricular activities and personal qualities. Selected applications are sent to our member schools, but it is the admission committees of each member school that make the final admission decisions.

Prospective applicants should get started early; late applications are not encouraged as it severely limits opportunities for placements. Further, our application process begins one year prior to enrolling. For example, if a student is currently in the 8th grade, s/he would be applying for the 9th grade.

A Better Chance does not offer scholarships. They just work with you on identifying schools. The schools award the financial aid so you would need to fill out forms for them.
A Better Chance : Tuition and Financial Aid
A Better Chance does not offer scholarships. Financial Aid is awarded by our Member Schools based on financial need of the applicant’s family and availability of financial aid funds at the school. The staff of A Better Chance advocates for financial assistance from our Member Schools. Thousands of schools provide financial assistance to ensure that the students they’ve admitted have a realistic chance to enroll, regardless of their financial circumstances. With the right planning and information, families can identify available financial aid options. And take the necessary steps to make an independent education for their children more affordable.

Financial Aid is awarded by our Member Schools through a combination of grants, scholarships, and loans. Grants are monies allocated which do not need to be re-paid while loans must be re-paid. Member schools give financial aid to help families afford the difference between the cost of education and the amount the family is able to contribute. Each year our Member Schools provide financial assistance to approximately 90% of A Better Chance Scholars. Additionally, each of our Member Schools offers payment plans and loan options to aid families divide costs over the school year.
