College app personal essay question

My dd is to write a personal essay that is "non-academic." She has one passion and has devoted hundreds of hours to it over the past ten years. I've taken some of this and used it to create two of her high school classes. If she were in public school, of course, this wouldn't be possible.

What do you think? Can she write about this passion? It's really been so much a part of her life, and it's something that she plans to do as a career. I think she can; she's worried that they'll consider it "academic."

What is the topic? I'm guessing it would be perfect, as long as she emphasizes the personal and social parts of it and not specifically the learning parts of it. Maybe something like "Although math is an academic subject, it's been my passion and I've met the most amazing people traveling around to various competitions"??
