Hi every1
I am from INDIA
I gave my SAT and got a score of 2180
Is it good and i will be applying to UC berkeley,ucla,gtech,purdue,MIT,Harvard,Yale,univer sity of michigan,carnegie mellon,columbia,cornell and princeton
i have never stayed in a place for more than 2 years but whichever school i went i become a prominent student there
Some of my achievements:-
1)NTSE scholar-a national exam given by approx 12.5 lakh children everywhere in 9th grade and only 500 get selected by the govt of india to be given scholarships
2)Volunteer work from 10th grade(around 300 hrs)
3)organised model united nations in my school and participated in many and won 2 best delegate awards
4)selected in the debating team of all schools attended
5)selected in the football team of the school in 9-10th grade
team adjudged to be the one of the top 8 teams in the area
6)active member of the eco club
7)participated in group discussions and won some of them too
8)active member of quizzing club
9)radio talker
10) fluent in computer languages -java,html.c++
11) member of aerospace club of the school
12)winner of nation wide scrapbook contest organised by Hindustan Times a national newspaper
13)actively participated in debates
14)got 90.5 percentile in national science olympiad in 10th and 11th grade
what are my chances of getting in the universities listed above
Will be giving SAT2 in may
and AP's next year

Are you a 17er?
What about your grades in 9th-11th? High school GPA is one of the most important things!
You can try to improve your SAT score in Jume or can try for ACTin April or June( for HYPM, for others 2180 is fine!)

p25, No man!! The score is alright for all the universities, It is around the 50th percentile of all the colleges as far as I know
To the OP, you have good chances, but focus on a few ECs, try to give them more time.

Just work on few from above ECs you really enjoy and pursue those through 11th and 12th. While ECs show you as a well rounded person, too many can be a spoiler and wise to narrow down to ones you really enjoy whether intellectually or physically or as a means of giving back to society, that way makes it much easier to convey your passion and consistency and persistence with things and sort of makes your application varied but well balanced at the same time. Many ECs through say class 7-8th onwards reflect that one is trying out things, one is exploring one's options and through 10/11/12 th reflect that you have sort of found what you were looking for, narrowed down so to say and so they also sometimes help to bring your personality across through your essays.

I agree with p25..if you are targetting HYPMSC and getting financial aid, you should try to improve your SAT to 2300+.

Otherwise you are a match for purdue,georgia tech. For others, your subject test will play a factor. And yes, your personal statement and recommendations are something we can't predict.

And what is your gpa for 10-11? You should be in the top 1-5% of your class to stand a chance for the big schools. Looking at the past indian students who are in hypms , they were pretty much the #1 student (or close) in their school/class.

^ No no, you still have a chance. I think what F16Parent is trying to say is that if your only strong point is academics, then you'll need such a high SAT score.

For example, if you are, say, a(n) (inter)national level sports player, or have shown incredible pursuit in research or are a published author, etc, then a 2200 is more than enough

^ It is of course, not necessary. But looking at the results /acceptances thread, it seems everyone has 2300+ . However, this is only one component and since hypmsc are getting so competitive, anything you can do that tilts your chances will have an advantage.

My opinion on this is if you have scored a 700+ in SAT Subjects, the focus should shift to other parts of your application. Admission to very selective College is a lottery at the end of the day, all other things being equal, meaning sometimes SATs get balanced by extraordinary ECs , perfect GPA or awards or exceptional essays, strong LORs and vice versa. Unless getting into an Ivy is your 'be all and end all' aim. But with that aim there are no guarantees. So while I am not saying, that should not be your aim, what I am also suggesting is, it is always wiser to have more realistic options as well.

Agree with Tizil.
Lack of an outstanding accomplishment requires you to make up for it through SAT scores. If not, then you're good to go.

@lmessi- Don't slack off in your 11th and 12th.

I am a living example of this, I got pathetic grades because I started focussing on other things, because of which my high school %age suffered, and I got rejected from almost every place I applied to..
