Hey sara

Most of us come on CC to look for info and share our experiences. I don't think anyone here can advise you on what you should do. The best that the group can do is give their inputs and share their opinions. In the end you need to use your wisdom in consultation with your family and take a decision. So one more time .....my opinion.

You are an adult and taking a decision and living with the consequences of that is what growing up is all about. And more important here is the first part - taking your own decisions using your judgement.

Also you need to figure out the exact reason for the state of confusion you are in right now. If it is just because people around you they will be the first ones to change their tune if you switch and still are not able to make a 'worthwhile' career as defined by them.

And if you are worried about job prospects I think people with economics degree are plentiful and people with Biotech degree are hard to come by, which makes your skill set exceptional.

And also remember even if you wish to pursue a career unrelated to this field, instead of wasting the one year that you have already spent learning, finish this and add one more year later to do a 2 year MBA and you become ever more marketable with a your skill set.

I am a parent and my D is a rising sophomore and I have been through this kind of confusion and we let it be our Ds decision, all that we asked of her was to weigh in all the possibilities, not look for an easy way out ever, talk to school's advisors and go from there.

Am happy to help, anytime.

One more thing, if you do decide to switch to Eco, there is a possibility that you might face the same conundrum one year into the program, so will you be willing to sacrifice one more year and start all over again with something else.

Think about it. Life is about making choices and sticking with ones you choose. It is tough sometimes but that is how we build resilience and this particular trait of our personality will help in fighting battles through all kind of situations academic, career, social etc.

One more exercise you can do that will help you get more clarity, is make a chart with two coloumns and list the criteria for both program and then rate those on a scale of 1-10, and then calculate the sum total and go from there.

For that you need to answer some questions.

Did you enjoy what you learnt in the first year?
If yes, did you find the academics challenging?
Were you able to cope with the work involved?
Did you manage to get satisfactory grades and will be able to sustain/ do better this year?
Have you made some interesting friends here?
Do you find the faculty accomplished both in terms of knowledge and teaching?
Is the overall environment to you liking?
What is pushing you to have this discussion, self or peer pressure?
Is the alternative program in college of your choice?
If yes, is it so exciting that it is worth sacrificing one year?
Does it guarantee a better job?
Have you done enough research in terms of comparing the 2 courses?
If yes, do the benefits of one heavily outweigh the other?
What does your family have to say?
What advise is the current school offering?
What makes you so sure that you would not want to change this too?
What if the environment is not what you perceive it to be?
Have you talked to seniors from the place you wish to change to and where you are currently?
How different is their feedback and actual job placement record?
Is that the place you want to be and will not feel odd in terms of your batchmates being a year ahead in your new college?

Why this is important is that your new friends and study group will be your juniors in school. If you were going to study out of the country this factor would not be of much consequence but same city and India, these things can be a factor on psyche , positive or negative, only time will tell.

These are only some of the questions that I can think of at this moment.

Switch only if you failed miserably or the content is not at all what you thought it would be.

Economics is a dry subject, for me, it is not everybody's cup of tea. It sounds simple, people either do exceptionally well or just about manage. And maybe if you had in school, you already know your coping capabilities with Economics.

My experience, I dropped math after class 10th and did not enjoy Eco in College at all, it was a compulsory elective for my Pol Sc Hons course. My D on the other hand had Math HL at IBDP level and Calc 1 was a program requirement in first year of college as was Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Math she enjoyed and Eco she struggled.

So weigh in carefully and then take a decision.

@anialways i dont have enough time.i know u have thrown a volley of questions at me.the questions u are asking me are not at all relevant for me.il tell u why.
1.i didnt study a single subject of biotech or remotely related to my fiels.coz in indian engg colleges they teach various streams in the first year like mech,it,cs,production etc etc.nd not a single sub of biotech.thats where the confusion stems from.
2.answering next three questions is totally irrelevant
3.i made really good friends but they are in diff majors.one in chemical and other in IT.
4.you know i havent met my other biotech peers yet and we havent sat in one class yet.all branches are shuffled up in 1st year and common faculty teaches so i havent had the opportunity to interact with them.
4.the overall evironment is ok.i have adjusted though
5.i as well as my peers are pushing me to have this discussion
2.

10.placement record is okay.it offers average salaries in india.below average too

The questions are what would help in your decision making, because as kids we are taught to ask questions, the more the questions the more the Knowledge, and more the knowledge, more the likelihood of answers we are looking for. Without that it is just impulsive and risky way to live and that is not how sound, educated societies develop. If you see the developed world, you will notice they encourage its people to get into debates and discussion, and at the same time respect the right to have an opinion different from yours.

I guess in case if the school is not offering any advise and the seniors don't have any positive inputs and you have managed admission in a good college, by that I mean, the college is known for a strong Eco program, and if you believe you will do better there and you know what you are getting into, and your family trusts you to make the right call and most important if the volley of questions is not raising any red flags, switch seems like a good option.

My D is at Stern,NYU studying BS in Business Studies and likely to major in Finance and Marketing. They have end of Sophomore year to officially declare their major.

I am a full time mom, and not a professional if that is what your question is.

And if you are already in your new college, Good for you.

Wishing you the best for this journey and onwards. Blessings.
