| What's your motivation for studying in the US (Undergrad and Grad)?
What's your motivation on doing your degree in the US?
International experience? Didn't get into a prestigious school in India? (I know the competition is intense!)
Also post what degree you're aiming for.

The exposure and hopefully the money.
Also, I can't deny the luring combination of lower intensity of competitivity and better resources.
Something unique to me was that I was ineligible, by circumstance, for any, if not most universities in India. So I use it as a legitimate excuse when not in the privacy of anonymous forums |

Pros of studying in the US - Dual degree programs, flexibility in cross curriculum enrollment, the vast variety of programs available, the internships/research/summer opportunities.
Cons - high price of education, culture shock, distance (last two are somewhat mitigated by the high number of Indian students and support now available for international students in big universities)
I think if one is set on a professional field and gets into a top indian university, I would say - go for it. But the folks that are not able to secure those top admissions, the quality of undergrad is questionable. Again, of course, this does not mean lack of success. Do the best where ever you are and success WILL follow.

Easy. Take a student from MIT and one from IIT...odds are, the MIT one has actually understood his concepts and hasn't tortured himself for 4 years through mugging.
I'm sorry, but my sister is an IIT alumnus, and she can tell you what she went through and why doing her masters at a US university was a million times better
But I do agree with the posts above me, even the cons..

crappy indian education system and crappier colleges with the most crappy student populations are the biggest driving force.

The Indian education system is in the rags. IIT or not. Its ********. Yeah its expensive in USA. But it is definitely worth the money. And if ones look at it in the long run, within 4 years of little spending you can earn back all the money spent for college in USA. Thats something that should be taken into consideration. In India, only a handful get a few jobs. Rest are just laying around earning not what they deserve. Business in India is a different thing altogether though.

How can you judge the capability of a student just on the basis of the marks he attained in 3 subjects.
I want to study computer science. But I have to show my capability through PCM. What the **** is this.

I want to study in a country where my talented is respected and I onto be pushed aside just because I do not qualify for any of the government quotas in colleges. I want to study in a country where everyone gets only as much as he deserves and where one's hard work and diligence is respected.

I don't think that the IITs aren't up to the mark, but rather its the quota system that has lead them to ruins. There were days when IIT roorkee boasted of the world's best civil engineering program and all the IITs, and even the NITs were in the ranks of the best universities in the world. But those were the days when the quota system didn't exist.......
