| IU letters are out! My S received a letter yesterday from IU. He was rejected from the BFA MT program, but offered the BA in Drama. |

| Sorry for your son but I agree with MomOfAPrincess that this is one particular BA school with a lot of opportunities for someone who wants to study and train in MT and I recommend it all the time. I personally know someone about to graduate from the BA program who has loved it. |

| Surprising rejection since the other people in the acting class told S he was the best after the class and before the monologues. Just goes to show you--still thinking about the BA, though. BUT since everyone can do the BA--how many of you out there are planning to do it? One maybe here. |

| I'm a current BA in the theatre program here. I didn't audition for the BFA program, since I wanted to be able to take more classes than the BFA MT Track provided... but now I'm wondering if I should have. Cuz it's really hard to get into shows, at least from what I've experienced, and it gets really frustrating when it seems like the BFAs are cast more. I know the BFAs will deny they get special treatment, and so will George, but still. Frustrating. How can you get a full theatre experience if you never are in any shows? |

Thanks for your input. I really think that was brave of you... and honest. It is hard to get real training when it is not on-the-job! |

| but to be honest these kids have auditioned for an extremely exclusive program and there is a reason they are there.. It is easy to say someone is playing favorites, but honestly if your S or D is talented enough and fits the part THEY WILL get cast. As has been previously stated in the IU talent thread. |

| Hello, everyone. Please understand that what I am about to say is not intended to be rude, it is just honest.
First of all, yes, many BFA Musical Theater majors were cast in the MUSICALS at IU this year. Only one BFA MT made one of the SIX other straight plays at IU this year. We do eight mainstage shows a year. Only two of them are musicals which (as it appears to be) are predominantly musical theater majors.
As for receiving "special treatment"... isn't that the point of the BFA program? We auditioned for the program that we are in. I don't deny that we receive special treatment.
As far as not getting any theater experience - there are several productions yearly put on at IU aside from the mainstage season. First semester there were two musicals (one Union Board show and one University Players show) aside from the mainstage season that featured theater majors as well as voice majors...etc.
There are tons of performing opportunities in straight acting and musical theater at IU... none of which are exclusively for BFA musical theater students. |

Thank you for your post. I think it's a chicken and egg discussion. Are the BFAs given special treatment OR are the BFAs just special? I think they are special so DUH they would get cast in the MT roles. But let's face it this is the 2nd year of BFA at IU and I don't think there are that many BFAs out there to compete with and a show normally requires a large cast. I also don't know of any Director that is going to cast someone who is a BFA over a BA if the BA is just perfect for the role.
As for opportunities to perform - we were told there were the shows in the Drama Dept, 2 Other Schools, plus the Music School, Plus individual productions. As for the MFAs - no MFAs got into Forum and only 1 got in Seussical. And what we were told made sense - the focus of the MFAs is usually different - they are focused on things like Chekov not Musicals.
My D didn't get into the BFA. Maybe George didn't need another tall brunette or maybe my tall brunette wasn't as talented YET as some other tall brunette. But I'm betting that after she trains with this very fine faculty at IU she will be fierce and have no doubt I'm going to be seeing her in shows at IU. |

| One thing that they stressed at our audition was that the directors truly cast the person who is right for the part. In Seussical, two of the principle roles were BAs who were rejected from the BFA program. |

| The best thing about the BA is you can take other classes you might really be interested in while getting almost the same classes as an MT major. |

| theatregirl during the presentation given at audition it was pretty clear that doing the BFA meant no double major, semester abroad or even joining a sorority. The demands of the BFA required constant choices about foregoing other things. If you want anything else, I'd suggest taking the BA where you can have almost all the same classes but also other things |
