So based on what they said at Orientation, it seems you pull up your car, dump everything on the sidewalk and then your driver takes the car away. I know parking is limited on campus - my D is a freshman and not taking her car. My question for you experienced parents and students on here is where can they park the car after dumping off her stuff? She is moving into Read.

There is a small lot in front of Read, then the Jordan Ave parking garage just to the north, and then a little farther north on the other side of Jordan is a large lot behind the Wells Library. My son lived in Teter so we used the Tenth Street lot, but I know there were a lot of people who parked on the surrounding streets like Seventh.

Now that you mention it, we moved in a day early. You have to pay for the extra night, but it was only around $25. It worked out well even though it was ridiculously HOT that day.

The main benefit of coming a day early was that we weren't trying to move into his room at the same time as his roommate who arrived the next day. It's hard enough to organize a small space with 2 people but add in 2 sets of parents and a sibling or two and you have a recipe for mayhem.

We used the second day to make our Best Buy/Target runs and get the computer hooked up.

If you can avoid move in day and do it a day or two earlier, do it. The move-in crowd is absolutely ridiculous. It's near impossible to find a parking spot to unload your stuff, traffic is awful, and there's no way to avoid it. Also I know that hotel rooms are very hard to find - people stay in neighboring towns.

The only thing about doing it a few days earlier is you feel like you are the only person on campus and it is really boring being the one person in your hall. If you move in, just make sure to do things that day (go to the SRSC, go to the library, go down Kirkwood, find your classes, check out the mall by taking the C-Route bus, etc.) I had one person on my floor when I moved in, granted I was there about a week before everyone else, and it was really boring.

We requested to move in one day early hoping to avoid the chaos on the official move in day. I would bet that a lot of other folks do the same, though I'm sure it will be much better than actual move in day. (or I'm hoping that's the case!)

I paid to move in early, and it was the best choice ever. Basically you just pull up to the curb, put on your hazards, grab a cart and do your thing. Plus hoosiers are way friendly and there are always tons of people who want to help/hold doors open, etc.

OK - Let's say we don't arrive one day early.... How early should one arrive on Wednesday morning (if the open time is 8 am).

Either arrive by 7:45 (to get any parking at all)--or just wait until after the "mess" and arrive about 1:30 to 2 PM--when everybody is leaving and heading out to buy stuff they realize they need from the local stores.

So ne 1 of u huyz cummin alone or wit parentz?????....wat if u arrive a day earlier and plan to spend at the nearby hotel...is it advisible????

Most out-of-staters do come a day earlier--which is why all the hotels in town get fully booked during that period.
