Question re; Automatic Academic Scholarships/availability when increased scores sent.

My daughter plans to apply for this:

IU Distinction - $36,000 ($9,000 per year)
The IU Distinction Scholarship is awarded to the best and brightest out-of-state students who meet each of the following criteria:
Out-of-state student (domestic and international)
Minimum SAT score of 1330 or minimum ACT score of 30
Minimum GPA of 3.80 on a 4.0 scale

But, right now her ACT score is 28. She's taking it a second time on November 7 and aiming for 30+. Her GPA is 4.154 right now. It may go up. We read the FAQ:

If I retake the SAT or ACT and my scores increase, can I be reconsidered for Automatic Academic Scholarships?

Yes, if scholarship funds are still available when the new scores are submitted. We encourage all students who retake the SAT or ACT to submit their new scores for reconsideration. The priority date for Automatic Academic Scholarships is November 1. However, based on available funds, students may submit updated test scores by January 15 for reconsideration of Automatic Academic Scholarships.

MY question here on CC is: If she sends in a higher score of 30+ ASAP after she receives her ACT score, what do you think the chances of having the scholarship funds available are? It will mean almost a double $$ increase in funding, if they can accommodate a 30 or over score.

I had said my daughter was re-taking the ACT on November 7 (that's the date for her SAT ll). I should have said October 24 for the ACT.

It's hard to say whether there will be any funds left. However, you should do what you can to expedite IU's receipt of the 10/24 ACT results.

I'm not sure if your daughter has already applied. If she has, then check the ACT registration website to find out what the timeline is for reporting the scores to the schools. I wouldn't wait to see how she does on the second test. I would have them automatically sent, unless there is a faster way.

If she hasn't applied yet, she needs to do it asap and online. Order the first set of scores now and send the second set the fastest way possible. IU will use the best set of scores to make their determination.

The sooner the results are received by the admissions office, the better your chances at any remaining scholarship funds.

In addition - if her score does reach 30 she should call or email her admissions officer in addition to just having the score sent. This will draw it to their attention for a 2nd look - otherwise that 2nd score report may just be placed in her file and not trigger any action.

You may also want to focus on SAT. My D did significantly better on SAT vs. ACT. However she only took ACT one time.

It's hard to say, especially with the increase in applications, but since she took her ACT's pretty early, and you can get those results in relatively early, you may have a good shot. I reccomend calling IU if she gets the score, and giving them her student ID number- they can look on the computer and see if the scores have been recognized by the school yet and whether she will be recieving the scholarship. They did that for me in October.

She can't focus on the SAT because she's taken it twice and it only went up 40 points. 1850 total and only 1190 for Math + CR. Some sections went up and some went down. She did better on the ACT, overall. She'll see how it goes with the second attempt. These kinds of timed tests just aren't her forte. I sure hope her GPA, ECs and essays will be enough to do the trick!

I remember seeing a notation online last year at IU's website that said "We are no longer offering any automatic scholarships". I was panicked, I thought they meant they weren't going to be offering them any more at all!...and my D was going to be in the class of 2010!

But, what they meant was that they were done for the year...all money awarded. So I'm TRYING to remember what time of year that was. I really think it was pretty late...like Spring...March, or even later? No guarantees of course. Good luck.
