My freshman direct admit daughter met with her adviser today. There are three things I wanted to check with you experts on CC:
1) She was advised to take G202, but she hasn't taken any Econ classes. Isn't E201 a prereq for G202?
2) She was advised to save X220 for second semester sophomore year since the class will help her with her resume which will be more useful next year than this year. Do you agree?
3) Are A201 and Econ 201 hard enough that she should avoid taking them the same semester? She did well in A100 and actually enjoyed it, if that makes a difference (not planning on majoring in accounting though). She's also planning to take Math 119 and K201 spring semester, plus one gen ed class.

Your daughter should definitely take E201 before G202. E201 is a prerequisite.

I don't think it would hurt to get X220 out of the way this semester. You can still add things to your resume next year, and any time she wants to, as the resumes are stored online and can be edited at any time, especially if she is doing an internship before graduation. Resumes will be covered again anyway in X420, which she can take junior or senior year.

If you daughter likes accounting and she is in Hutton, maybe she can get into A205 Honors Financial Accounting this semester. It is only taught in spring semesters. It is only 40 students per section and only meets twice a week, as opposed to the 200+ A201 sections which meet three times a week. A205 spots are going fast, however, and she would probably only be able to get into the 8:00 a.m. section, if she has 15-20 credits already through AP, etc. My son took A205 and X220 second semester as a freshman last year, and was glad to get them out of the way. It is almost impossible to get less than a B- in A205 (you would have to be in like the bottom 1%), but A201 grades pretty harshly, as do most of the non-honors accounting classes.

I think E201 and A201 would be ok the same semester with M119 and K201. But I would hesitate to add much more to that schedule, as those classes will definitely keep her busy. Maybe take X220 instead of a gen ed, as the X220 is only eight weeks, for a total of 14 credits. Maybe save a gen ed for cc and transfer it to reduce stress and help gpa. X220 is pretty much an automatic "A" so long as you daughter does not miss any classes, as each class meeting is worth 25 points, and there is a 25 point bonus for not missing any lectures.

My friends say E201 was hard, but I found it very easy (guess it depends on the individual).

For G202, E201 is a pre req and should be taken first.

I took X220 my freshman year and enjoyed it. It will help with internship searches(which will help if she is trying to get an internship after freshman year), but it is not information you will forget like other classes (so she will still remember everything sophomore year). Don't take X220 second semester sophomore year; take it either spring or fall (internship hunting starts in the fall and continues to the spring).

Also, I agree w/ bthomp1's suggested schedule, taking X220 the first 8 weeks (will help when finals roll around in May).

Thanks for the responses. She is not in Hutton but is hoping to apply for second semester. I think based on your advise her plan now is to take K201, Calculus, X220, A201 or E201, and one Gen Ed course (plus the one credit required KLLC class). Any thoughts on professors to try for or avoid?

Tulare, I'm in E201 now with Professor Graf. The material is sometimes difficult, but he does a really good job with the lecture and keeps it entertaining. He is also very accommodating as far as office hours and providing help for students who seek it. If you put in the work, you'll be rewarded. I would highly recommend him. I've also heard good things about Olsen from a few friends. Avoid Professor Self at all costs!!

Thanks for the professor tips, tayx63. By the way, I saw your earlier post that mentioned Finite Math isn't your thing. If you do decide to take it at IU you should try for McKinley. My D has him this semester at the recommendation of others on CC and says he's great. She said friends with other instructors are really struggling, but those with McKinley like him a lot.

Thanks! I've heard that from a bunch of different kids in my classes...but more than half of the finite classes for spring still don't have professors assigned. I register next Wednesday so hopefully I'll be able to know who I'm getting before I register. I decided to take finite since my CC doesn't have a course schedule up for this summer yet, and I don't want to chance them not offering the class.
