Question about Automatic Academic Scholarships

I'm a senior and I've received my acceptance letter with a scholarship. If I happened to get a GPA this semester that is a little bit lower than the qualifying GPA listed, would I still lose it? I'm really worried about this. :/ Some of my classes this year are really tough.

No - it's based on what you submitted - though you still need to graduate!!!

If you do get a scholorship would it say online, or do you need to wait until your acceptance letter arrives through the mail?

Last year the scholarship information came with the official acceptance packet in the mail.

Justlooking:

For this year...I'm pretty certain my D got an e-mail first. That did speak to the qualification for the AUTOMATIC scholarships (based on GPA/SAT or ACT).

Then I think the mailed letter spoke to that as well, and an invitation to apply for Selective Scholarships (that is based on the stats you sent with your application too).

Then Hutton Honors College wasn't mentioned (as far as being specifically eligible anyway, it came in a separate envelope about 2 weeks later.

But, for the AUTOMATIC scholarship...it's very easy to see if you qualify. Just check the scholarship page on the IU website. It's very cut and dried.

You should be fine. My grades were not so hot by the end of senior year but I still got my Distinction scholarship.

Automatic Scholarship Criteria Creeping up?

Hi,

Does any one recall if the criteria for the automatic scholarship have creeped up from 2009 to 2010? The 2010 criteria are as follows:

Automatic Academic Scholarships: Office of Scholarships: Indiana University Bloomington

Thanks

Yes, they did increase (link below). So...perhaps they'll be stagnant next year?

But it could go the other way. Because they seem to be getting what they want, a more qualified student body. More "good students" are choosing to go with the value education. IU's average SATs have been increasing, more National Merit kids are matriculating every year, and more students who were offered the Presidential Scholarship have accepted each year. I hope we're not at a saturation point just yet!!

The required SAT increased the past 2 years. From 2008 to 2009 it increased 10 points. From 2009 to 2010 it increased 20 points. (FYI-this was for the Presidential Scholarship

I believe IU has announced the new criteria in early June the past two years.

I'm personally hoping it doesn't creep up too much before the 2011 admissions cycle. I have another child a home that I hope can take advantage of the scholarships opportunities.

The $9,000 scholarships have had a big effect on attracting OOS students with high test scores.

Most Indiana students take the SAT. The number of SAT reading scores in the 700-800 range increased from 6.6% in 2007 entering class to 7.6% in 2009 entering class-- an increase of 1%.

The number of ACT reading scores in the 30-36 range for the same period went up from 19.9% to 28.9%-- an increase of 9%, or nine times more than the increase for SAT reading scores of 700+.

Of course, many OOS students take the SAT, but the huge ACT composite score increase was probably achieved almost exclusively by OOS students. A lot of these are probably Illinois students, as all Illinois high school students are required to take the ACT, and IU enrolls Illinois students in big numbers.

Thanks for the insight. I am in the same kind of boat as rrah. It is reasonable to expect some increase in SAT like 20 points. Hopefully it is not a big jump. I will have to see how my kid is doing on Feb 11. Now, if IU raises the GPA level to 3.9, it would be tough.

Good luck to all!

ace550 - reminder...IU accepts as grades whatever your school sends them, meaning - WEIGHTED, if that is what the school sends. I know all schools weigh differently and I'm thinking they'll SURELY change this someday (soon?), but...until then - ask your school what type grades they send, then you'll know if you're only needing a 3.9 WEIGHTED. That's a BIG difference than a 3.9 unweighted!

R124687,

Thanks for the reminder and the info on Cox Research scholarship. My boys' transcripts had both weighted/unweighted GPA's. My younger twin boy just got his weighted GPA slightly over 3.8. There is no chance for him to conquer the 3.9 mark by this summer. I guess that we will have to work with what he got.

I'll bet he's fine. One of the levels JUST went from 3.7 to 3.8. There isn't much left, I'd think they'd nudge the standardized scores again before they moved the GPA. There is much more leeway there.
