Application procedure

Hi,
I am a student in New Zealand, I am planning to come to the States to study but I don't really know the application procedure for colleges in the USA. If someone could outline exactly how it works or where I could find more information on it, it would make my life so much easier as I am slightly lost.
Thanks

Hello,

The first thing you need to do is to determine which universities you are interested in. Then go to their web sites and look at the admission requirements for International students. Many of them require an SAT (possibly ACT) test score. So you need to find out where in new Zealand you can take that examination.

Once you have decided where you will apply, contact the Admission Office and they will guide you to completion of the application. most universities have online applications but you will need to have your High School transcripts (I assume you are interested in undergraduate, not graduate studies) and some letters of reference plus your personal statement (and possibly some essay answers to specific questions.

I am sure I have forgotten some details but you can get the information from each university's web site.

Good Luck

The other option is also to visit the common application --link below --
https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/default.aspx

there you will find links to university websites. When some university reps (mostly Ivies) visited my child's school, they recommended the Common Application to start with.
Also visit the College Board for your SATs -

College Admissions - SAT - University & College Search Tool
The ACT | ACT's Curriculum-Based Educational and Career Planning Tool | ACT

If you are still in year 11, now is the time for you to outline your plans and take the SATs or ACTs, if you're now in Year 12, you better act fast as the application will open soon for the Fall Freshman Class of 2017.
Hope this helps!

I am taking my SATs soon.
Thanks for the information
