Good TOEFL score but poor speaking section score.

Hello

I'm applying to the likes of HYP and just received my TOEFL ibt score. I got 106 which is above the 100 mark that all top unis require. Yet I only got 20/30 in the speaking section- I don't often speak English in everyday life. Is the score still acceptable? ie Do they look at the global score or do they look at the different sections too?

Well, everywhere it is stated that you need 100 overall, so it implies that there are no down limits on each sections. Addidionally, for example, some graduate schools, which requires a certain score on each section, clearly states that, so I assume that colleges, if they required a certain score, would state that, too. In conclusion, you're all right And congrats on high reading/writing score, that's impressing!

Thank you. I hope you're right. I might email them to confirm. Moreover, do you think, as mentioned elsewhere on CC that toefl is just a pass/fail test, ie there's not much difference between 100 and 120?

The University of Chicago says that every subscore needs to be at least 26 points. Even though you'd make the total minimum mark of 104, you wouldn't qualify for admission.

If you are concerned, why don't you contact the admissions offices and ask them directly?

I think the subscore of 26 in each section is a recommendation rather than a requirement.
+ They waive the TOEFL requirement if one has attended an english-speaking high school for at least two years. That's my case.
