| McMaster - Canada I'm pretty unfamiliar with the school - and would like to hear anyone else's opinions/thoughts on McMaster in Hamilton. |

| I live in Canada, and most people here I dare say have never heard of it. Sorry! How about some other top CDN schools like Mcgill? U of T? Toronto? UBC? Queen's? |

| No offence, but Hamilton is a boring city. Ethnically not diverse, and not much to do. McMaster itself is a pretty good school, a lot of the top kids go there especially for programs such as health sci, but nonetheless it is really nothing compared to UofT, McGill, UBC. |

| My uncle did his undergraduate there and got his MBA at Wharton, so I'd say McMaster is pretty respected in academic circles. |

#8 | | Guest | McMaster is pretty good!! It offers a wide variety of courses and has grown substantially in the last few years. The down part is Hamilton itself! The city is filled with a very very large number of low-income individuals (more than 50% are on social assistance). Be prepared to see a lot of sketchy looking people, and be prepared for a higher crime rate in Hamiltion than most cities in Ontario.
Queens, is ok, not the best, but ok (I know because I'm a Queens grad and I live in Kingston). Great city, nice people, extremely low crime rate. The down part is Queen's has dratistically cut more than 45% of its courses that were available in the past 2 years (and it planning more cuts). Queens is good for graduate programs, but is seriously riddled with disgruntled undergrad students not getting into the courses they need for their degrees.
(If I could go back in time and choose my undergrad school, it would not be Queens, because it was such a hassle to get the courses I needed to for my degree, and forget about funding!!) | |

| Hey Zach,
I live a few blocks away from McMaster University. It is an excellent and prestigious university in Canada (rated one of the top universities in Maclean's) and it is especially well-known for its Health Sciences and Arts Sci undergraduate programs. It also has a very good business program and medical school.
It's funny to see how many people have misconceptions about this university. First of all, it's located in a well-off, middle-class, and ethnically diverse part of Hamilton called Westdale Village. Westdale has everything that you will need to live comfortably, from clothing shops to a movie theater. There is a very strong sense of community here. There are many greenspaces, such as the massive Churchill Park and walking trails. Yes, the downtown core of Hamilton is not so great, but as a student you will never need to go there (I go there maybe once every 2 months). Here is a great link with information about Westdale and even a virtual tour: http://www.westdalevillage.ca/main.htm

| McMaster is a very good school, especially for anything related to medicine or engineering. And most Canadians HAVE heard of it, especially in Toronto. It's in Hamilton, which is like a 45 minute drive from Toronto. The city is small and kind of crappy, but Queens is exactly the same thing - very good school in a very crappy town. (Kingston) |

| Hamilton isn't "kind of crappy", it's a hole. McMaster may be a decent university, but I don't know how anyone in their right mind would like to live in Hamilton for 4 years of their life. |

| LoL. Ok, it's a hole. But still, the university itself is far more important than the city in which it happens to located. (*as I smile while typing this post from my amsterdam apartment*)
Really though, the university is the most important thing. When choosing between two institutions that are equal in quality, only then should the location become a serious consideration IMO. |
