All of the generous colleges I know fall into 3 broad categories, neither of which seems to fit your friends needs very well:

- ultra competitive college (Harvard & Co)
- women's colleges (esp. Mount Holyoke and Smith)
- lowest-tier colleges (who are throwing out merit aid to attract at least a few smart students)

Why go to the US to play soccer:s? It doesn't make logical sense.

He would be better of trying his luck in the UK or Europe for that matter.

b@r!um- That was very aptly said.I agree with that...I was hoping someone could show me some other solution to this dilemma. Iv realized that education in the US for international students is not the best idea unless you are qualified enough to get incredible scholarships, rich enough to pay the full price or desperate enough to go to a crappy school..how unfortunate.

Hi Luki...
Your friend could try for Berea College. It offers full aid to all accepted international students. A friend of mine with 1600 sth in Sat and average 'A" Level result got accepted there this year with full aid. They even waived the deposit money for him. So it maybe a great option for your friend.

Luki: Can you be a bit more exact about his grades? Also what other ECs does he have? That will help in trying to find suitable colleges for your friend. The other thing is, if your friend is really serious about studying in the US, he should consider retaking the SAT, particularly if he thinks he can do better on a second try.

Thanks guys. Well,In trying to help him out-i didnt realize that this is what he needs to be doing,not me. Hes a really good friend,but i cant force him into doing whats good for his own future.I'll tell him to come to cc and ask his own questions if he needs to,i cant mommy him any longer.its really something you cant do unless you want it that bad..and im not sure he does.thanks a lot,i hope all of you are happy and succesful in life. Caldwell College
University of New Orleans

Caldwell offers full tuition with a 1210 sat (math +cr) and a good gpa. Look it up. The University of New Orleans offers a FULL RIDE (tuition,books,room,board) if you have a 3.5 gpa and a 1210 (math+cr).

I applied to a bunch of schools for fall 2008, all for financial aid. I got bad new s everywhere. I don't have a father just like your friend, and believe me that didn't seem to make the colleges care more. Both Villanova and Richmond accepted me giving me the huge amount of 0$ per year. That is right, they didn't give me anything. I was wait listed at Trinity University and Davidson College and I'm waiting to hear from a scholarship at LSU. But, I'll most probably go the University of New Orleans.

In any case tell your friend to apply to a lot of places. However, his best bet would be to have the gpa and sat necessary for the University of New Orleans. Sure it isn't a great school, but it does have an honors program. Plus it is in one of the funnest cities in the world NEW ORLEANS.....GEAUX MARDI GRAS.

he's screwed. Financial aid for internationals is not need blind and you have to be an exceptional student and your friend sounds pretty mediocre, no offense.

He can apply to Wesminster College in Missouri, Earlham in Indiana they are not top noch schools but Earlham is pretty good. They give aid to international students. He should definitely add Middlebury college in Vermont to the list.
