International Students, how has your life changed since you left home

As the year pass away from home, I feel that I am becoming a more mature person. At the same time, I want to return at least every two years so I will not feel like a stranger in my own country when I go there. You know those people who go home after ten years, they don’t even know in which street their primary school is.

-The biggest change for me was that I am no longer homophobe and it happened last year. I come from a homophobic society so my family and my friends will be like WAW! When I will tell them that I talk to gays. I wouldn’t mind also if a member of my family is gay.

-I always wanted to leave home and I was ready for it but sometimes I just feel that it will be perfect if my parents could be to take some decision at my place.

-Someone in a forum told me once, that most of my questions were in English. I felt bad using English more than my native languages. I was linguistically confused and thought that my cultural identity was messed up till I realize that “I am just multicultural and multilingual” now. Oops! Not so bad.

-I love my siblings and miss our futile fights.

-The best one is that I love my country more than I could ever imagine. Nothing is better than home.

And I realized how lucky I am for studying here because there are a lot of young people like who never had this chance and will never have it.

Your turn guys!

I haven't been home since I came to the US but I would go back this summer and it would be two years since I went back.
I feel I have become more liberal too-don't care about gays or abortions. But also scared and excited of going back to see my friends.

I was always a liberal. For instance I was in a drama club home and most of my teachers were gay. I was ok with it but I used to think that it is the worse thing that could happen to someone. I did not go home last year and I am not going this summer either. I went home once since I came here. I know what you mean about being scared. People will change. My principle is to never ix my life back home with the one that I am living in the US. That way, I won't be too culturally confuse when I go home.
