d-concerned's list of 10-12 UK schools should be included is the perfect number and that is still giving american schools a lot of bias. Where I'm from the majority of students know only schools in the Uk and only know about 6-7 American scshools. While if you go to Korea for instance it might be very different

OP (dconcerned) and longbowmen, maybe we should move on from your topic of debate, as it seems to be going nowhere in particular. Instead, let us continue to work on the list, and by the time we settle on 50 schools or so, it will be clearer which ones are worthy of making the final cut, and which ones are less qualified.

So..

Amherst
Berkeley
Brown
Caltech
Cambridge
Chicago
Carnegie Mellon
Columbia
Cornell
Dartmouth
Duke
Edinburgh
Georgetown
Harvard
Imperial
Johns Hopkins
KCL
LSE
Michigan
MIT
Northwestern
Nottingham
Nyu
Oxford
Penn
Princeton
Rice
SoAS
Stanford
Swarthmore
Tufts
UCL
UCLA
Warwick
Williams
Yale

And back to my proposal: USC.

dconcerned, over to you

edinburgh is considered a very good, well respected uk college offering a comprehensive range of programs/majors and their 16 programs/majors are rated top 10 in uk. Edinburgh is ranked, according to sjtu, #6 in uk, #11 in europe, and world ranked at #53. definitely one of the most respected colleges in uk.

apart from cambridge/oxford/imperial/lse/ucl (considered top 5 in uk) and edinburgh just described, let me bring out some interesting stats (times good uni guide 2007) for the following unis:

school/programs in uk top 10/their total programs ranked

warwick/20 (1 ranked #1)/26
nottingham/29 (3 ranked #1)/46
kcl/16/29

there are approx 60 popular programs (called subjects in uk), to have 15-20+ programs in top 10 is considered quite respectable and should be well considered as good candidates for uk college applications. warwick is particularly strong in and well known for their business programs, economics, math and so on.

now, i'd like to add two more to the list.

bristol/34/40
bath/20/26

bristol and bath should be given special mention. both always have their programs placed in top 10, many in top 5 and even top 3 which means almost next to cambridge and oxford. bristol, having 34/40 ranked top 10, and bath, having 20/26 in top 10, are really top uk choices almost in any majors/programs. in fact, american students who consider applying to uk schools always mention, many on cc boards, bristol/warwick/bath as their main college choices.

If we're temporarily bumping the list up to 50 then I'm going to add my alma mater (UCSD) to the list. It is #14 and #58 in the two major ranking guides and certainly hold its own when it comes to the sciences...and while I'm at it I'll add another two top notch publics in Wisconsin and UVA. Both are a step below Berkeley, but are nonetheless world class. USC would be one of my first cuts from the current list...this isn't a list of the top 30 sports schools

I think we've reached the max for british schools. An ideal list would contain 28 American schools- because everyone in collegeconfidential schools in America, 12 from the UK and 10 Liberal art colleges.

"what the hell? remove all the UCs except UCLA and berkeley"

The only other UC is UCSD which (as I mentioned above) is one of the premier research institutions in the world. When it comes to making a list of the top US/UK universities, research quality and name recognition are probably the two most important factors. I don't think UCSD would make the final 30, but it makes the top 50 easily.

"u wisconsin??? whats happening"

In my opinion Wisconsin is above quite a few schools on that list: USC, Tufts, Nottingham, Bath, Bristol...
