anyone else's parents not want them to leave?

my parents don't want me to leave for university and want me to attend the local crappy college. I mean its an okay school but its not what I'm looking for. they argue that if I stay here all work will be done for me and I can study more and get better grades. it's gotten to a point where my mom won't talk to me when I bring up US schools, IB, ACTs etc.

anyone else experiencing something like this?

Good Luck

Haha, story of my life with my mom. We had a driver when I was eight or so who moved to Canada and he still keeps in touch with her. So he's traveled all over Canada and the US and he says that "the US wouldn't be a good place for you. In fact, you should come to Canada so I can keep an eye on you"(!!! You can imagine the look of horror on my face.)

Now I thought college was all about being independent and standing on your own two feet, yada yada. Thank God my dad's behind me every step of the way.

Same thing for my mom...

'You're too YOUNG !'

Well, yes, I'm not quite fifteen, but um, who wanted me to skip three grades ?
And there is no way in hell that I'm staying in Morocco. I've seen enough bigotry to last me a lifetime. And Canadian unis are just big.

And yes, it's gotten to the point that she interrupts me before I say 'SAT'...

My mom used to do that too, but I think she finally accepted that I wanted to go to the US when she came to get me after I took my SAT. And THEN our old driver called her. What lousy timing.

LOL. I had to borrow my brother's credit card to book the SAT's and pay college application fees because my parents didn't want to know. they've gotten better now, and are even discussing essays and references and stuff, but being Australian they hate the US.
I just want to experience a place where learning is the goal, not to complete your university years as quickly as possible to get some boring job. They don't really get that.
so good luck to all of you having parental trouble, I totally sympathise.

Yeah its pretty common for mom's to feel that way. the best way to handle it is to make sure that you appear a mature, confident person who is well aware of the pros and cons of your decision. at least that's how it worked for me...

My mom would rather see me go to the States for grad/professional school. She'd feel better knowing that I would be easily able to come home if I got stuck in a rut or something.
Then I remind her that from Toronto, Cornell is closer than McGill.

My mom hates the US. She insists that I apply to some UK universities too, which I do gladly as they are kind of safeties for me. But she says that I should do whatever I want to do and the main thing is that I'm happy. And, ofcourse, as UK universities give almost no money and the US ones give, well, tons, she thinks that I should choose whichever will be cheaper.
