@Sarthak: You have great and valid reasons to go to HKUST, but it'd be pretty hard for me to turn down Rice, Cornell, UMich and UBerkeley. But that's just me. You clearly have thought through your reasons and obviously what 'fits' is most important. And of course, a full scholarship seals the deal.

Haha, i wouldn't call hk beautiful-- i've been there several times and every time we are about to land you can barely see the ground because it is so heavily covered in smog and pollution. It's a great, hustle and bustle city, though, albeit very cramped, and the food and shopping is hard to beat. It's very active with many foreigners. I like it most for its energy and internationalism.

@ Ruby_x3: Yes a scholarship does seal the deal... But if I were in US the unis would have been cheaper for me and I would have gotten the student aids (FAFSA) etc as well, maybe then I would have thought differently! But for me right now this is the best place to go

You are right about Hk, but thats the main area... HLUST is at Clear Water Bay and is the most beautiful place that compliments the huge campus !! Google Earth the place or google it, it looks really calm and spectacular !

Ruby_x3,

If you are from Hong Kong, paying a lot extra to go to those schools may be worth it. IMO, you pay the difference for 2 things: 1) the vastly different experience of studying overseas and 2) the opportunity to get job offers in the US after graduation if US is where you want to live. But #2 can be obained by doing a one-year MS in the US. HKUST uses US textbooks; students are motivated; and professors are mostly US/UK educated. I haven't seen any evidence that shows engineering education in those schools are superior. It'd be a mistake to think you are paying that much more because of the alleged or perceived difference in the quality of education.

Sarthak19118,

There could be some exception. Certain MS programs can be pretty difficult to get in. I know Stanford's MS&E is one of them (management sciences and engineering). That's a very popular program for obvious reason. Also, I think recommendation letters will be an important factor also so try to interact more with the professors.

HKCEE & HKAL Admission Stats at HKU (locals only)

JUPAS Admissions Grades
These grades/scores don't seem that high but keep in mind the following:
1. D or E is the mean/median
2. HKCEE grading curve in 2008: A% was 3, C or above% was 25, E or above% was 74. 26% of the grades were either F or U (unclassified; the worst).
3. HKAL grading curve in 2008:
AL subjects: A% 3.8, C or above% 23, E or above% 74
AS subjects: A% 1.6, C or above% 18, E or above% 80
4. A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 1, and E = 1
5. The stats apply only to students under JUPAS scheme. Some students got into HKU under early admission scheme based on stellar HKCEE grades (usually 7A or 8A and above); they enroll a year earlier than their peers and avoid A-level altogether. These students, the best based on HKCEE results, are excluded from the tables. These students, along with internationals, take away some of the offers available and that's why you see "total number of offers issued is less than 10" for fields like IBGM.
6. Look at only the average scores; the percentile tables appear to have errors all over.

My results/

I submitted my HKU and HKUST apps on Janauary 17 and my school docs will reach there by Jan 20th.
When should I be expecting to hear back from them?
Do they have a set deadline on when they will notify the applicants of the result? or are just...unpredictable?

rebecca1234,

I saw that you may be interested in the actuarial science program at HKU. The actuarial science undergrad program is one of the most loaded (extensive and rigorous) and the best in the world. Last I checked, at least 4 faculty members were Fellows; that's another sign of a very strong program because many schools don't even have one Fellow. In terms of admission difficulty, it is one of the three most competitve programs in Hong Kong. Waterloo has a very strong program and it's probably just as good, if not better.

HKU Scholarship?

Does anyone know if applying for scholarships at Hong Kong University wll affect our admission?? Usually admissions are affected in colleges in the states if we apply for scholarships... so I was wondering if it was the same for HKU.

Ps: I'm attending an international school in China but not Chiinese

I don't think so but that's just my guess. HKU scholarships always seem to be merit-based. My guess is if you are exceptional, they will give it to you. Otherwise, they could just admit you without giving you what you asked for.

Hey~
Can I ask something. I applied to HKU (Econs/Finance) around Decemeber, and got an email from them last week asking for supporting docs to be in by 15th Jan (already past).
Anyway, my IB scores are out, I got 37. I did a lot of ECs. I'm trilingual - English, French, Hindi. Do you think I have a chance at the scholarships?
Me cannot afford HK. :/
And btw. I'm Indian too. Studied the IB in Singapore on scholarship XD
Thankies~

Scholarships dont affect your admission in Hk... They will offer you a place without one if they want to, and if you are good enough they will offer you a scholarship anyway!
