Summer Internship- High School

Hey guys! I am going to be a rising senior over the summer of 2012.

Over the spring break, I already found a summer research internship at UMDNJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) in the microbiology department; however, recently I learned that my family can get me an summer internship at the MORGAN STANLEY bank in NYC. I wanted to ask you, what do u think is a better opportunity, if I had to pick one? Oh and what is more reputable to put on college apps? Can you please provide ur thoughts on the matter, I would love to hear them.

Re:Summer Internship- High School

I think it depends on what you're intending to pursue in college. If you would like to go into the medical or science-related field, then the one in the microbiology department would be better. However, if you are into the humanities and economics, then the bank would be better. It really depends on what skills you want to gain from the experience.

I have a quick question. I'm a high school student and also looking for internships for this summer. So, I was wondering on where did you find your internship? Did you find it on a website? I have been doing some research, but most of them are for college students.

Basically i started mass emailing college professors for research opportunities over the summer... since it was really late in the yr and most professors already had summer research plans with undergraduates, I emailed about 90 professors before receiving a "yes"; however, i feel like a summer research opportunity is worth all the work.... as for the bank internship, my uncle works with Morgan Stanley and is pretty high up on the corporate ladder, so that one was purely on family connections :P

Omchi23 - It can be difficult and definitely takes time, but any high school student can secure an internship with enough persistence. The best advice I can give you is: don't assume that a "college internship" won't also take high school students. It's a lot less commonplace for high school students to intern, so companies may not think to specifically "open" the internship to high school students. Of course, internships are also big recruiting tools for employers, so you may be out of luck with some companies, but if you have the skills and motivation, it certainly doesn't hurt to inquire about an internship listing that is targeted at college students. You'll also discover that some of the best internship opportunities aren't publicly listed anywhere. You just need to find a company that you're interested in and make contact.

On our website, we have a lot of additional good, free advice and resources to help you create a resume/cover letter, narrow your search, find companies, interview successfully, etc.
