college majors

After college I would like to work for promoting Civil Liberties. What would be recommended for me to major in while in college? I am not really interested in law. I was thinking either social work or international business..

Why not pre-law? If you want to promote civil liberties then you should have some background of the justice system.

agreed

you could end up working for the ACLU (american civil liberties union) and get the patriot act repealed! Civil Liberties and law are intricately connected. In fact, the former are (theoretically) protected by the latter. I think your best chance to do some good in that area lies in lawyering. Social work is a noble profession but, from the little I know about it, it only addresses the ills of society. You wouldn't be addressing big civil liberties issues as a social worker.

Are we on the same page regarding your definition of civil liberties? I'm thinking about 1st amendment type work. If that's what you really mean (rather than social justice stuff that you would do in social work), then go to law school and work for the ACLU.

I think there is such a thing as a "social justice" major at some schools, but you might benefit from something more general like Political Science.
