i am an upcoming sophomore biochem / econ dbl major. although i am doing biochem research this summer, i intend to devote the next couple to financial internships.
and here comes my question: since it is so difficult for rising juniors to obtain summer analyst positions at ibanks, would it behoove me to just go with a consulting internship, reserving the ibank experience until the following summer. also, i want to gain experience in both fields, and i would be better off doing banking before my senior year since that is the time when the firms extend offers to impressive interns.

What makes you think that you'd get a consulting internship? Internships at McK and equivalent firms will almost solely go out to juniors as well...

I thought that the opposite was true :/
As you can see, I am not too connected with the high-level financial world. Would it be worthwhile, in your opinion, to bust ass just to get these internships, then? It seems to me as though they want to have rising seniors for a reason...

if you're not at a feeder school its really tough even junior year (not sure where you go), but getting an internship exponentially increases your chance of getting a good finance job (most places recruit first year analysts primarily from their summer interns, with offers at the end of the summer). Definitely bust your ass next year to get a somewhat related internship, and use that to get an ibank interview or 2, and just clinche to long ass technical interviews.
