Impressions of JP Morgan (Asking)

I wanted to ask veteran CC forum members about their IBD experience or group experience at JPM. The firm currently recruits on my campus, and I will be attending an info session in a few weeks in NYC with members of my school.

I was wondering what your personal experiences were like, as in the JPM "culture," the pay (I assume they match GS's $14k for 10 weeks), your coworkers, and the life/work aspect.

I've interned at the asset management firm BlackRock for the past two summers and winters, but am looking at all possibilities for my senior internship (and a couple of boutique hedge funds).

What I like about JPM: Their Good Venture program, their analyst training and orientation, and transparency.

A few of my friends at MIT and Harvard recently got summer offers and were quite happy with their internships (and remarked how they were rejected elsewhere but welcomed with open arms by JPM).

Thanks!

a little off topic, but what majors do you have to be in to find an internship/entry level job at JPM?

Practically any major as long as you have the Quant and reasoning skills along with intangibles (teamwork, ambition, composure) .. I've seen many kids from LACs with majors in Philosophy or Art History do banking, but these were usually Tier 1 schools such as Williams/Amherst/Swathmore/etc.

Typically: finance, economics, mathematics, physics, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, and business management majors.

Yeah, for some reason, they cream themselves over liberal arts majors. Actually, my school (UChicago) had the highest number of full time hires for 2006 at JP Morgan, and UChicago is very heavy on the liberal arts (at the expense of being pre-professional).

To answer one of OP's questions, a friend of mine (she was a 2nd year) interned at JP Morgan, and did not make close to $14k. Actually another friend of mine (again, 2nd year) worked at GS, and made $12k. Apparently the real money is in hedge funds/private equity, where kids can make 20-25k in a summer, plus use of a car.
