I am majoring in (pure) math and minoring in comp sci and I have some course work in econ. Comp sci might become a major or econ might become a minor eventually. I have no idea what field I want to work in but I know what type of work I would enjoy. Can you help me come up with ideas based on the following criteria?


What I want

- Work on projects
- Work that involves a lot of problem solving and some (but not too much) creativity
- Ideally my work would force me to constantly learn new things (e.g. staying up-to-date in the field or getting familiar with new fields)
- At the end of the project (whether it's a week or a year) I need to see that my work has made a difference (secretarial work, for example, would drive me nuts)


What I don't want

- Work that focuses on people (teaching, sales, practicing medicine...)
- A lot of routine
- Getting my hands dirty


I am indifferent about

- Working hours (I don't mind long hours)
- Location
- Salary (as long as it allows for a decent life style)
- Opportunities for advancement
- Grad school (but no med or law school please)

There are many careers in statistics that fit your criteria exactly--if you have at least a few stat courses or agree to study stat in grad school. You could use both your math and computer background in areas such as biostat, survey statistics, quality control...working for the government or private industry (including consulting). Peruse the American Statistical Association website (www.amstat.org) or look at its publications, especially Amstat News, for more info.
