Placement with firms

Thanks giob70, I will look into it. I just found out that if you get an interview but don't get an offer from a firm, you eliminate your chances of being placed there. If they reject you, SEO cannot place you there anymore. Risky. I am glad I decided not to go to a few interviews..!

I spoke to a recruiting rep at one of the partner firms late January and was told that they were already working with SEO for intern placements. So I'm pretty sure there is much that we don't know about the proces..

Also, if you get rejected by a firm whether it is for 1st round, 2nd round, final round, etc, the firm won't want you placed there. I've had several lengthy conversations with the SEO staff about this (I am definitely the "problem intern"). They advised me to cancel all my interviews, which is what I ended up doing.

Has anyone been admitted, or know of someone who has, in the last week? If I haven't heard from them by now, should I assume I was rejected/wait listed? The notification deadline is February 22nd.

Pingus, did you have a 2nd phone interview yet? I'm excited to hear their decision. I feel like it has been an eternity since 12/15.

do you think our performance on the pre-placement training exams and courses play any role in firm placement?

Don't you have to get at least a 90% on them anyways?

I don't think it will matter, placement is all about fit with the firm.

Think about....SEO already has a list of good interns, and they are not going to pick the best(by GPA and School and High scoring indivduals on the exams) students to Goldman Sachs and so forth. They are looking for the students that fit the best with the firm and a normal distribution will follow. Imagine if your were the relative worst bank SEO partnered with! Would you get the worst (bottom of the list students) every year NO. you would def no longer partner with SEO.

Bottom line once your in the SEO pool its a 1/12th possibility of getting anywhere (Change that if you already got rejected somewhere 1/(12-n))

Yes you still need an easy to get 90% on each test.

What defines rejection? Is it submitting an application and not getting an interview, or is it getting the interview and then getting a rejection based on the interview? Or is it both??

I would say both. As long as youre in their HR system, when SEO places you in a firm they will be able to see when you submitted your application and if you were reject before an interview was conducted or after. Btw thats how I filled out my "appication to partner firm" part of SEO. And from the email that was sent last week, "Our goal is to have full understanding of your interactions (past, present and future) with our partner firms." And ". It is imperative that the information we receive is correct."

haha WFBanker08 yea, I thought about that. I figure they will try to avoid putting u in a bank that does not want you, but sometimes they will put previously rejected students. But hey try it!!!

i'm gonna sound like a nerd, but i'm sitting in the library doing this stuff and i figured it applies here....

are you at all familiar with game theory? if so, what's the nash equilibrium for this situation? if goldman is everyones' top choice (i would actually prefer lazard, but hey), wouldn't everyone try to get themselves rejected from every other bank?

i'm surprised more people aren't doing that, assuming that SEO won't place you somewhere if you get rejected there. it's a wonder the program can function under these premises. ok, i'm done.

doubts and lack of full disclosure of information about the process prevents the equilibrium from be reached at this point. but you can be sure that if ppl start doing that the policies'll change =p

It's great that SEO's website encourages applicants to independently apply to partner firms, however, it almost seems like a penalty if your resume or interview results in a rejection. I would hope that the resume rejection would not be such a big deal (could be too many resumes to review or a poor quality resume) and not count you out from being placed with a firm. If an intern makes it through the SEO process (resume & interview) the partner firms should at least look at the interns who never had an opportunity to interview with their company--there just might be something special about the individual that did not jump out on paper.
