I have been reading that prospective employers and even University administration have access to ones online profile like Facebook and MySpace. What I do not understand is how they could view a Profile that one has effectively used the privacy settings. For example, in my case I only people who are my “Real” friends ones that I know in person be my friends and if your not my friend you cant even see my profile or even my picture in the search results. So my question is how are employer or Universities able to see a Facebook profile under such circumstances?

I know they could get a Court Order or a subpoena to have someone at Facebook to testify of what was on my facebook, but I find it hard to believe they would do that and they are not the police so they would have no probable cause.

If you only friend people you have confirmed as friends, then you should be fine, unless there's pictures of you floating around in other peoples' profiles which aren't as secure.

Most people don't seem to bother setting privacy settings other than requiring you be in the same school, so it's fairly easy to gain access to those profiles.

Yeah, they can't actually see your profile if your privacy settings are set correctly but they may request to "friend" you.

An employer did that to me once.
