internship plan

can any current or former college students give me a basic outline of what types of opportunities/interships are available for freshman, sophomore, and junior year students? Is it possible to get a good intership as a freshman? and when do most people apply for them?

I'm not a student, but my son is a freshman mechanical engineering student. He went to career services in October to develop his resume, went to a campus career fair in the fall, and then another one in February. He went to a number of interviews and he has 2 offers so far, one with a major construction company and another with the engineering department in the military. He called people he knew in the field and looked online. So, really, he started looking for his internship as soon as he started college.

freshman yr - you should look to decent paying jobs/extracurricular activities
sophomore yr - looking into finding your interest, passion, major, and internship if you can get one
junior yr - getting an internship relating to your field, take a leadership role in a organization to build your skills
senior yr - stick with the same internship hopefully or find another one and see if they offer you a full-time spot when you graduate
