I know that many of you are wrapping up school year internships or are getting ready for Summer semester internships. As a rising freshman in college, I would like to know (and I'm sure many others would too) - what is the most important thing to know about getting an internship?

What should one do if they go to a school in the middle of nowhere? (Like I am - I'm going to Maine.)

High GPA, some work experience, know exactly what you are looking for, and a lot of initiative.

Initiative is right. I sent out at least 100 emails between January and May and finally landed a private equity internship in mid-June (as a college freshman).

You can probably start through your parents' network. That's usually pretty helpful. Also, know what you're talking about. Do your homework... and remember, "you got to spend money to make money."

Quantity matters. Contact as many companies as you can that you're even remotely interested in.

Check your state employment website, often overlooked, but sometimes a winner for that first internship. Check out various department websites there, some students here found a few nice opportunities under Dept of Environmental, various social services depts, etc. Also don't neglect to check for non-profit listings on the various boards. Finally, try a site called jerseyintern. although offerings are in NJ, it will give you some ideas perhaps.
