Summer work for between undergrad and grad school

Hello all,

I will be graduating from my undergraduate college this coming May. I have applied to several graduate schools so my plan is to attend graduate school next September. However I am trying to figure what I should be doing for work from May to September. I am skeptical about looking for a full time job offer right now since I don't see why a company would hire a newly graduated engineering student for only three months, or am I wrong? What do people typically do in this situation?

I believe some people do intern during this summer - met a few like this when I was interviewing at Microsoft.

Our son took the summer traveling with his classmates who were also going to grad school. They were burnt out, each doing double majors and worked in previous summers.

Odd now that son has completed his MS and has done a whole year in different internships in different places, and he is burnt out on traveling. He may be doing a phd unless something turns up soon.
