Today at the dinner my mom brought about the topic wanting to go back to community college to earn a 2 year associates degree. She said it would be free for unemployed and asked ME if she was eligible if she's a homemaker, after hearing Obama's speech in Michigan on the news today.

I'm too lazy to read the article Obama to boost community colleges - 2008 Presidential Campaign Blog - Political Intelligence - Boston.com but I find this absurd to have the government to pay workers to go back to college. We're in the biggest economic recession since The Great Depression.

Affordable, open-enrollment community colleges will play a critical role in meeting that goal. Yeah by 2020 the recession will probably be over. I think Obama is over his head and is giving false hopes. IMO Republican are truthful and say no no no first, while Democrats say yes yes yes but lie under false ideas and propganda.

I don't really understand Obama's propasals at all. Can someone explain me this new Michigan proposal?

I haven't heard about the new bill, but I do understand Macroeconomics.

Your mom wouldn't qualify as unemployed unless she can prove that she has been looking for work and hasn't been able to find any (i.e. records of interviews with different companies).

In theory, if you invest more in education there is a higher productivity rate and a lower rate of accidents (both in the workplace and at home), leading to a higher GDP. This is why almost every industrialized nation provides free education through high school. Although this will cost money in the short run, in the long run our country would benefit from a program like this (assuming the productivity % increase is more than the interest the government has to pay on the money used to finance this).

Ummm, they are not paying for workers to go back to college. They are proposing this for the UNEMPLOYED. You say it's absurd but what about paying unemployment/welfare?

And what false hope are we being given? Where did Republicans say "no,no,no"?

Do you realize that many are expecting employers to start creating jobs as soon as this fall?

Ha, overall, I would say maybe you should form an opinion on the matter AFTER you, I don't know, read the article?
