Is this a good idea?

I'm thinking about taking a year off to work for a year. I think I want to get my EMT license over the summer and then work as an EMT for a year.

Right now I can get into a few mediocre colleges, and think this would make me look better. Plus it is something I really want to do.

Am I right that it would make me look better, or would taking a year off make me look really bad?

Do it, best figure out why you are going to school before you start; you'll get so much more out of it.

I have a question for this, to do this I'll need one semester of classes at a community college to get certified. How will this effect me for college, would I technically be a transfer? And, if I do good in that class can it help me get into a better college?

To my knowledge, at most colleges this would not make you a transfer candidate. Check with the colleges you are interested in attending, though.
