Interested in CIA/FBI/Weapon Design Should I have chosen computer engineering?

Hey I'm currently a junior electrical engineer at manhattan college with a 3.8 gpa.

I originally chose EE because it supposedly offered more options than computer engineering. Now that I've gone through 2 years of EE and realized that I honestly hate the electrical side of EE and really enjoy programming, I think I made the wrong decision.

Should I switch if my desired career paths involve a high cleareance government job? Or should I stick it out and just take some more programming oriented senior electives, and go to graduate school for computer?

What positions at which of the government contractors are you looking to fill. The company and the job will partially determine what you take. Getting a clearance is not a trivial issue for an employer; depending on the level of clearance it can cost $20k or more for them to get you cleared, these jobs tend to go to folks who already have clearances.

My advice (having done this for 30 years) is to always study the stuff you like. Doing anything different will lead to real painful issues when you end up in a job you don't enjoy.

My D started out in EE also, and switched to CE for the same reason stated. I think it was during soph year. I doubt that a switch will really impact your career prospects (lots of both EEs and CEs go into software), plus you may end up with an employer-pleasing higher GPA doing what you like. Just be sure you determine what the delay, if any, there would be to your graduation date and are willing to accept that.
