Connections

My cousin is a Senior VP at Morgan Stanley in Hong Kong (going to be MD pretty soon). How much of an influence does she have if I decide to use my "connections?"

as long as you have a semi-decent resume and she's willing to vouch for you that pretty much guarantees an interview in any office

though once u get the interview she pretty much has no say

It's actually easier than that. it's not Morgan Stanley but my friend got an internship at Merrill Lynch and she said if you know someone there, they hire you on the spot. If that person says "he/she is a good worker" they might give you an interview but it's a guarantee hire.

I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't think a senior VP in HK could guarantee you an interview for NY...also, I don't know what the person above is smoking about getting hired on the spot.

HK is very different from NY. A good GPA means nothing in HK. Without a "connection", you have almost zero chance to find an internship there.

Supposedly, some MDs have the ability to hire on the spot.

connections are extremely important. my sister had a spring internship at goldman sachs in london and the connections she made very helpful. a recruiter requested her resume for a summer internship and now she'll be fast-tracked through the summer internship application process.

hopefully she'll get a job there and then she can be my connection in the future
