Hi,

I'm an incoming freshman and I'll be staying in Helser Hall, Elwood. Comments from previous, present, or incoming roommates would be cool. Not the Hall I originally wanted, but I hope it'll still be a fun place to live in.

I actually lived in Helser Richey my freshman year(3 yrs ago). Roommate was alright however my floor sucked. All the kids that lived on my floor were the type who enjoyed playing video games and sitting around on Friday and Saturday nights playing the role playing games. Not saying anything against those types of people, however it just isn't me so I was forced to branch out even more to meet new people.

Overall, Helser is a very old dorm building. It is nice because it is close to UDCC (food, cafe, etc) as well as close to construction for State Gym (done in 2011) For me it was nice because it was less than 5 min walk from engineering buildings. It is nice that it is close to Friley, Martin, and Eaton dorms because there are always people around to do something with.

That blows. I'll just try meeting people from other halls and maybe join a frat or something.

Wait. The gym is under construction???? No gym??? where do people go workout?? Is there an LA fitness or a free weight room for students?

This is what the web said:

"The Recreation Facility Expansion and Renovation Project began early this summer. A significant part of this project involves the total renovation of State Gym. As a result, State Gym will close no later than mid-September (exact date to be determined) and will be unavailable for recreational use for approximately two (2) years."

I'll be really short on money, but I still want to stay in alright shape. Any gyms anyone can recommend? My orientation is in August, so I haven't been there yet.

It is difficult to say that your dorm floor will suck though. Each year is different. My year Larch was the cool place to be, but I know last year it was Friley. It will all depend on where the new people decide to live for the 2010-11 school year. So don't get down, I'd just wait and see what the year brings.

As for a fraternity, it is a great way to meet a lot of people. Some also give members a great opportunity for leadership experience. I joined one my freshman year and I haven't regretted it since. I have met a lot of cool people, and I and have loved every minute of it. My advice to you is you chose to go this way is to tour a bunch of them and find which one you fit in the most. Contact someone who is in each fraternity and they will hook you up. Last bit of advice, try to join a larger fraternity. Nothing against the small ones, but you'll find out that the larger ones are more social and will entice you to meet more people.

The Lied Rec Center (located on east side of campus) is open. It is located just north of the Maple-Willow-Larch dorm complex. it is completely free for all ISU students

The construction is a renovation of the old State Gym (used to play basketball there years ago). They are renovating the gym into a new recreation facility for students on the west side of campus, because at times the Lied Rec will be very busy.

Hey, I'm in Helser Livingston. My floor seems mixed on the type of people on it but can't judge that yet. My roommate seems cool and so do some other people I've talked to on the floor.
